2022 IILWG/Grunin Conference - Washington DC Satellite Event Invite:

As part of this year’s annual IILWG/Grunin conference, the IILWG- DC Chapter has arranged follow-on events to be held in-person in Washington, D.C. This event is not hosted by NYU.

There is also the option to attend virtually. These events will be hosted by McDermott Will & Emery, at their offices near Union Station. After the past couple of years, we look forward to the opportunity to gather in-person again, and we hope you will be able to join us! Please feel free to also invite your colleagues outside of the IILWG-DC Chapter.

    Description: Drawing from their leading and exemplary practices, our panel will impart views on how lawyers can successfully advise in the areas of impact investing, social enterprise and ESG. We will explore how legal practice in this field has evolved, and what kinds of opportunities and skills law students and young and transitioning lawyers can anticipate going forward.

  • 3:30-4:20 pm: When “Innovative Finance” does not require Innovation nor Finance – How added complexity can distract from impact
    Description: How might the concept of “innovative finance” – simply defined as any approach to fund social or development problems in new, creative, or more effective ways – become a distraction from achieving real impact? Who benefits from the added complexity of some of the new innovative finance structures, including development impact bonds, SIINCs, and social impact guarantees? And what can we do to ensure innovative finance approaches are aligned with the needs of the people and communities we intend to serve, not just the funders? Join us for a thought-provoking conversation addressing some critiques to innovative finance approaches.

 About the IILWG-DC: The Impact Investing Legal Working Group (IILWG) is a community of approximately 300 lawyers around the U.S. with a growing presence abroad who work in the areas of impact investing, blended finance (including development finance), and social entrepreneurship.  They represent a diverse array of organizations, including companies, financial institutions, government agencies, multilateral organizations, nonprofits, investors, and academic institutions.  Local, connected IILWG communities have been formed in Washington, D.C., New York City, Boston, the Midwest, and San Francisco, as well as in Europe and Latin America.  The DC Chapter was launched in November 2018.
