Open to 2L and 3L students
Maximum of 10 students
Fall and Spring semesters
3 or 4 credits*
Course Description
Up to 10 students who have secured their own externship positions with a civil rights, impact litigation, or policy organization or unit in the New York City area may enroll with the permission of the professor in this course, which includes a one-credit seminar and two or three field work credits (an average of 8 or 12 hours of placement work weekly). Students who are enrolled in other clinics or externships are not eligible to participate in this placement externship in the same semester.
Qualifications for Applicants
Applicants must secure their own externship placement in order to participate in the course. We expect students to have secured an externship by August 1 for the Fall semester and January 1 for the Spring semester), and to inform the professor of their placement by that date. If students have not secured an externship placement by these dates, they should set up a meeting with the PILC office for assistance in securing one. Please note that externship placements must be in person or hybrid.
While there are no interviews, students must attend an information session on March 31 at 3:30pm or April 6 at 5pm. If you are unable to attend, please contact the professors to schedule a meeting on an alternate date.
Please note that if you have not secured an externship placement by the time of the first class meeting of the semester in which you seek enrollment, you will be un-enrolled from the course.
Application Process
Students should submit via CAMS the standard application, resume and unofficial transcript. Applicants to this clinic must also answer additional questions to complete their applications, available on the Forms Page and in CAMS.
* 3-4 credits include 1 credit for seminar and either 2 or 3 credits for fieldwork, as approved by professor.
