Main Floor, Vanderbilt Hall
Judge Abraham Lieberman Reading Room
Best for quiet study in traditional library setting
Located in Vanderbilt Hall, the Main Reading Room features ample natural light and a mix of large and small tables for quiet study, as well as a printing station (B&W only).
Features
- Some background noise near Library entrance, printers, and Circulation and Reference Desks
- Adjustable chairs on rollers
- Several standing desks (south side, back)
- Bookeye Overhead Scanner (south side)
- Traditional copier/scanner (north side, room 108G)
Main Reading Room North
Best for more relaxed study and taking a quiet break
This area offers soft seating and plenty of natural light.

Reference & Circulation Desks
Both the Circulation Desk and Reference Desk are located in the Main Reading Room.
- At the Circulation Desk (located at the Vanderbilt Hall entrance), patrons can borrow and return items, pay fines, retrieve course reserve materials, and access other services.
- At the Reference desk (adjacent to Circulation Desk), librarians provide expert in-person research assistance. Research assistance also available online (chat, email, or Zoom).
Group Study Room
Best for collaborative group work
Located in the southwest corner of the Main Reading Room, the Group Study Room accommodates 3 to 8 people and is available by online reservation.

- Enclosed and conversation-friendly (please be mindful of nearby study areas)
First Basement, Vanderbilt Hall
B1
Best for quiet, focused study
Located one floor below the Main Reading Room, the Law Library’s B1 level contains general print collections (call numbers AC-Z).

- Individual study carrels around the perimeter
- Caper chairs on rollers
- Corridor to bathrooms and drinking fountains
Bound Periodicals 2 Room
No study space is available.
Accessible from B1, the Bound Periodicals 2 room contains print periodicals.
Second Basement, Vanderbilt Hall
B2
Best for quiet, focused study
Two levels below the Main Reading Room, the B2 level is split into two main sections:
B2 North: Foreign law collection and
B2 South: New York materials, unbound journals, and practice resources.

Compact Shelving
Best for quiet, low-distraction study
Accessible through B2 South (two levels below the Main Reading Room), this area contains public international law materials and materials with NYUL call numbers, stored on movable shelves with built-in lighting.

- Study carrels with built-in lighting and wooden captain’s chairs
- Low light environment (portable lights available at the Circulation Desk)
- Often has open seating during peak times
Computer Lab
Located on the B2 level of Vanderbilt Hall, the Computer Lab offers computers for general use.

- ScannX Overhead book scanner
- 12 iMac workstations
- Printers (B&W and color)
- Two Bloomberg Terminal computers (make a reservation)
Balcony, under Sullivan Street
Sullivan Street Study Room
Best for low-volume collaborative work in small groups
Located off the south side of the Balcony, the Sullivan Street Study Room is a low-volume collaborative space with tables that can be configured to student needs.

- Flexible furniture & chairs with casters
- 2 large monitor stations
- Water fountain
- Whiteboards
- Stress busters (puzzles, craft supplies, and quiet games)
Golieb Room
Located off the north side of the Balcony, this area offers individual study carrels and houses a state law collection and periodicals.
Features
- Best for studying with some background noise (carrels near balcony)
- Best for focused study with minimal distractions (carrels in stacks)
Brown Atrium, under Sullivan Street
Brown Atrium
Best for working quietly together in a space with some natural light
Located partially beneath Sullivan Street, this underground study space offers large, open tables and natural light from overhead skylights.

- Some background noise (from foot traffic on balcony above)
- Restrooms and office supplies station
Derenberg Room
Best for working quietly together
The space, situated in the sub-basement adjacent to Atrium, offers small group tables and some individual study carrels.
Features
- Honors former Professor Walter J. Derenberg
Golding Media Center
The Golding Media Center houses the Library’s microform and media collections, with a few carrels available for quiet study. Instructions are posted on microform machines.
Gruss Talmudic Civil Law Library
The Caroline and Joseph S. Gruss Talmudic Civil Law Library, adjacent to Brown Atrium, houses the Law Library’s Talmudic Law collection.
Furman Hall
Furman Hall Study Area
Best for quiet study with minimal distractions
The Law Library's Furman Hall space includes both open tables and individual carrels amid high density shelving.
