This information has been prepared to help you plan to meet your requirements and schedule your courses for the 2025-26 academic year. The general process of registering for courses is explained, as are the course and credit requirements for the Juris Doctor degree. (You should adhere to your home school requirements.)

You are responsible for reading and following the procedures and policies that govern the registration process at NYU School of Law.

The following information should be read in conjunction with, but not in place of, the information on the Year-Long Registration Overview and the Academic Regulations, Course Requirements and Graduation Requirements: JD Division web sites.

Year-Long Registration

All registration is done via the COURSES site.

  • You will be able to register for both fall and spring courses in advance of the start of the fall semester. An automated bidding algorithm enrolls students in courses based on the number of points bid for the courses and a fixed set of criteria described in the Year-Long Registration Overview. There will be one fall registration cycle for transfer and visiting students. After the transfer/visitor fall registration cycle, all upper-class students continue bidding on Fall 2025 courses and then Spring 2026 courses.
  • If you have questions or issues with registration, please submit a ticket to the Law Registrar’s Service Desk, which you can access via the COURSES site by clicking on the button in the bottom right corner.

Course Availability
  • Space availability in some fall courses may be extremely limited and/or courses may even be closed because continuing students registered for fall classes during June and July.

Note to Visiting Students:

  • Visiting students can try to register for seminars, colloquia, and simulations, but be advised that spaces will be extremely limited and you should be flexible as well as be aware that you might not get the seminar you need or want.
  • There is no guarantee that a specific course (regardless of whether the same is required by your home school) will be available to you when you register.
  • Do plan to be flexible by taking a course in a different semester than you may have intended. No special requests will be considered.
Prerequisites
  • Review the course description and course update web pages to learn whether or not a course has prerequisites or is mutually exclusive with other courses.
  • All students must meet course prerequisites.

Note to Visiting Students:

  • Visiting students will not be required to submit prerequisite waivers due to the timing of registration for visiting students. However, please be aware that faculty assume that all students have completed coursework in the listed prerequisites and the rigor and pace of the course will reflect this.
Credit/Fail Option
  • Second- and third-year NYU JD students may elect to register for a total of two non-required courses on a Credit/Fail basis during their final four semesters.

Note to Visiting Students:

  • Visiting students will only be allowed to do this provided the approval of their home school is submitted to the Office of Academic Services and the faculty member teaching the course has listed the course as being open to such registration.
Cross-Registration

Note to Visiting Students:

  • Visiting students can participate in the election of language courses in the College of Arts & Science, Stern School of Business preferential courses, and other non-law courses so long as you provide approval from your home school.
  • Please note that the Columbia/NYU Exchange Program is not open to visiting students.
Passing Grade Certifications

Note to Visiting Students:

In order to confer your degree, your registrar may need to know that you have completed your course requirements and will receive a passing grade of “C” or better before your final grades post to your transcript. At NYU School of Law, fall grades are due in mid-January 2026 and spring grades are due late-May 2026.

If your Registrar will need passing grade certifications for you, it is important that you keep in mind the date by which your Registrar must receive the certifications and exam dates when selecting your spring classes. The Spring 2026 examination period is May 4 - May 14. For classes which have full-period take-home exams, you may need to submit the exam earlier than the end of the exam period in order for the professor to have sufficient time to receive and review your exam by your school’s deadline. Please note that we require the professors to have at least three days in which to review your exam or paper before submitting a passing grade certification to our office.

If your Registrar confirms they will need passing grade certifications, please submit a Passing Grade Certification Form to the Office of Academic Services. The form can be found on our downloadable forms web page.

Although we will request your faculty to read your exam or paper by the deadline your school requires the passing grade certifications, we cannot guarantee that your faculty will be able to adhere to this date. (If you receive an approved postponement of an exam, this might delay the submission of the passing grade certification by the professor.) There is a possibility you will not be certified to graduate in time for January or May graduation.

Additionally, it is important that you request an official transcript be sent to your home school at the end of each semester. (Please be sure all your grades have posted to your transcript before you make this request.) You can request an official transcript via Albert. On Albert’s home page, you should click on the “Grades & Transcripts” icon on the left-hand side of the page. You will then see an option for an official transcript.

Tuition
  • Transfer students must make payment for the fall semester by the first day of class, August 26, 2025.
  • Visiting students must make payment for the fall semester within one week of their first registration.
Helpful Links for Registration

Carefully review the information at the links listed below. This information is essential for a successful registration experience.

  • Law Registrar’s web page
  • Registration and Academic Calendars – Important dates for each semester. It is especially important for you to be aware of dates and deadlines since you will register for fall and spring courses.
  • Using COURSES
  • Course Descriptions – These online descriptions contain all relevant information about the course, including method of evaluating work, attendance requirements, pre/co-requisites, mutual exclusivity, etc., so it is important to read the entire page. If a faculty member has not completed their course description, you will not be able to search for that class via this site.
  • Schedule of Classes and Block Schedule – Classes can meet at any time within the designated blocks not only at times listed in the schedules. While staying within the block, an instructor may (with notice) alter regular meeting times or use any unallocated time for makeup classes.
  • Faculty Biographies
  • Cross-Registration – Includes language courses in the College of Arts & Science and Stern School of Business preferential courses.
  • Course Updates – All changes in the curriculum will be posted on the web site. You must check the site regularly for updated course information such as new courses, canceled courses, and corrections to the schedule. Even if you are registered for a course, you will not be notified of changes. It is your responsibility to check the course updates for any changes and for new courses that may have been added prior to either term.
  • Forms – Downloadable forms as detailed in your guides.
  • Exam Schedule – Please note students are advised to review the exam information in course descriptions and on the Exams website.
  • Course Evaluations – Prior to Spring 2005, course evaluations are available in the Office of Records and Registration or the law library. Course evaluations from Spring 2005 and forward are available online. Beginning Fall 2008 you will be able to see comments in addition to the statistical information.
  • Registration Statistics from Prior Years – Reviewing the clearing prices for closed classes from prior years might provide a sense of which courses were historically popular when planning your bids for courses. Click on “Closing Prices for Closed Classes” in the menu.
  • NYU Brightspace – Check NYU Brightspace for syllabi and assignments for any courses for which you are registered. Sign on to your NYUHome account and choose the Academics tab to view available NYU Brightspace course pages. Not all faculty post assignments and the only way you will know is if you check on a regular basis. You can only view NYU Brightspace assignments for the courses for which you are registered.
  • Course Syllabi or Early Semester Assignments (Class Web Pages) – Not registered for a course but considering registering during add/drop? Check “Course Syllabi and Early Semester Assignments.”

Please feel free to contact the Office of Academic Services or the Office of Records and Registration if you need additional information or assistance.
