Postponements and Accommodations (NEW)

Introduction

“Postponements” and “accommodations” are terms that refer to non-standard exam experiences. A postponement refers to a student, for various reasons, taking an exam later in the exam period than it is originally scheduled. An accommodation refers to a modification of the administration of the exam (such as its time, length, or allowed technology), usually due to a student’s personal circumstance of disability, religious observance, pregnancy or postpartum period, or personal/family emergency. You may see the abbreviation “PPA”--this is shorthand for “Postponements and Accommodations.”

Accommodations for Students with Disabilities

For students who have already been approved for exam accommodations by the Moses Center:

Step 1: Log into ExamReporter and click the Postponements link on the left.

Step 2: Choose an exam and select “Approved Moses Accommodation.” Note that you will need to create a separate request for each exam you wish to apply your accommodation to.

Step 3: Press “Submit.” Repeat as necessary for all exams you are seeking to use your accommodations for.

For students who have not yet worked with the Moses Center, but who feel they may need academic accommodations for the upcoming exam season:

  • As soon as possible, submit your application to the Moses Center for Student Accessibility. Have all available relevant documentation supporting your request ready to ensure faster processing of your application.
    • “Relevant documentation” may include (but is not limited to) letters from medical providers, documentation of diagnoses, results of neuropsychological testing, and/or past records of accommodations throughout your education. You do not need to have all your documentation in order to submit your application to Moses–your counselor will let you know what else is needed in order to process your request.
    • After a certain point (around a week before the exam period begins), the Moses Center can no longer process applications for the semester, including the exam period. If an urgent accommodations request arises past this point, please reach out to the Office of Student Affairs at law.studentaffairs@nyu.edu.
  • If you are approved for exam-related accommodations, you must make sure that your accommodations letter is on file with the Office of Academic Services.
  • Log into examreporter.law.nyu.edu with your netID and password.
  • For each exam that you will use your accommodations, please submit a request via the ExamReporter portal.

For students with extended time or reasonable break accommodations, you can calculate how long your exam will be using the Exam Accommodations Calculator.

For all other information about academic accommodations at the Law School, please visit our Academic Accommodations & Accessibility Support page.

For Students with Other Types of Accommodations

For requests for accommodations unrelated to disability (such as pregnancy, parenting, religion, or unforeseen family emergencies), please fill out a ticket through the Law School’s centralized exam support system, JIRA. When you submit a ticket, it will be reviewed and assigned to a relevant administrator who will be able to work
with you on your request.

Postponements

There are a few reasons that a student may need to postpone an exam, all outlined in the Postponements section of our academic policies guide. Regardless of your reason for postponing, the first step should always be to submit a postponement request in ExamReporter and fill out a support ticket. A relevant administrator will be in touch to work with you on your request. Students should never request postponements from their instructor, to preserve the anonymous nature of our grading
system.

To submit a postponement request on ExamReporter, follow these steps:

  • Log into ExamReporter.
  • Click on “Postponements” on the left-hand side.
  • In the dropdown menu “Request Postponement,” select the relevant course.
  • Select the reason or type of postponement. If relevant, include additional details about the request in the submission box.
  • Click “Submit.”

If you are seeking to postpone multiple examinations, please note that you will need to submit a separate request for each exam you wish to postpone.

Illness Postponements

Where health needs preclude a student from sitting for their exam on a scheduled date, reasonable efforts will be made to postpone. If you are sick, do not begin your exam. Fill out a JIRA ticket and an administrator from the Office of Student Affairs will reach out about next steps. Please note that in order to postpone an exam due to reasons of illness, a student must provide documentation that they have been seen by a medical provider (but can feel free to redact any sensitive medical information from that documentation).

Postponement requests are processed in the order they were received, so it may take some time to see your new date, time, and room (if relevant) reflected in ExamReporter. Please be patient and continue to check ExamReporter, and reach out via your JIRA ticket if you have any additional questions or concerns.
