Student Accommodations FAQ

How will the Law School know if I have a classroom or exam accommodation?

Once the Moses Center grants you a classroom or exam accommodation, you can request that an auto-generated letter is transmitted to our office. Once we receive your letter(s) we will be notified of your accommodation(s). Please note that if this step is not completed every semester and for every course, we will not be made aware of an active and approved accommodation, so please ensure that these are submitted to Academic Services every semester.

Will I need to type an accommodation letter?

No. You will not need to compose a letter, as an auto-generated letter will be available once you have completed the registration process with the Moses Center. You can access a student portal tutorial to learn how to make this request.

Who will the letters be sent to?

Your notification letters will be sent to the Office of Academic Services. Law professors will not receive letters and will not have access to the Moses Center Online Portal. Your identity will remain anonymous to the extent possible.

What happens if my accommodations expire?

You will need to log into the online portal and complete the Request for Additional/Extended Accommodations online form. You will also want to submit updated documentation to your Moses Center Accessibility Specialist. If you're unsure of your eligibility status, please check with your Moses Center Specialist.

What is different about this process from previous years?

Students will have the freedom to customize their letters to reflect the accommodations that they will want to use for each class. Students will also be responsible for submitting accommodation letters each semester via the online portal. To learn how to do so, you can review this step-by-step tutorial.

Will this change the way that exams are proctored?

No, Law Academic Services will still manage and proctor student exams. To learn more about this process, please visit our Exams page.

Should I submit accommodation letters to Academic Services if I was recently approved for a classroom or exam accommodation?

Yes, every law student will need to use the online portal to send their notification letters. To learn how to do so, you can review this step-by-step tutorial.

How do I start the process to request Law School accommodations?

Please see our webpage on Requesting Law School Accommodations.

I just met with an Accessibility Specialist at the Moses Center and they approved my accommodations request.  What happens now?  Do I have to do anything else?

You will need to request to send your accommodation letters for each course to the Office of Academic Services. Once we receive your letters,  and if you are seeking classroom accommodations, you'll want to submit a request for each course using our ServiceDesk portal.  If requesting exam accommodations, you'll want to submit a request in ExamReporter when the portal opens for submissions, typically a few weeks before exams begin.

Is there a deadline to request accommodations?

There is no specific deadline for requesting accommodations; however, we recommend allowing at least 4-6 weeks for processing your request and implementing it in a timely and efficient fashion.  Please note that the Moses Center usually stops processing new applications several days before the start of the final exam period, and will only apply requests to the next semester, so plan accordingly. If you have approved accommodations for the classroom, there is no specific deadline for generating your letters and submitting your ticket through our Service Desk

I want my accommodations to be kept private.  Are accommodations confidential?  Should I tell my professors that I need accommodations?

Law School accommodations are confidential and professors will not have access to the Moses Center Online Portal. Only qualified staff will work with you directly to ensure that your accommodations are implemented. Students should not be coordinating accommodations directly with faculty, as we want your identity to remain anonymous to the extent possible.

Do accommodations carry over automatically each semester?

Most accommodations carry over, but you must submit accommodation letters for each semester you need them and for each class specifically. Please consult with your Moses Center accessibility specialist directly.

My accommodation is no longer needed.  How can I update or modify my request?

You may choose to use (or not use) your accommodations for a given class. Simply do not request letters for the class if you will not be needing the accommodation.  If you make changes to your accommodations during the semester, you will want to use the online portal to send an updated letter.

The Moses Center offers a helpful step-by-step tutorial on how to request accommodations. You can access it via this link.

I'm taking a full-period unproctored exam.  Can I use my time accommodation and/or postpone?

No, due to the flexible nature of full-period exams, requests for additional time and/or postponements will not be granted.

What can I Expect for In-Class Exam Postponements and/or Accommodations?

Accommodated and Postponed exams are administered in rooms separate from the main exam room(s) used for the rest of the class.  All exams in Accommodated and Postponed rooms will start at the same time. However, please note that there are likely to be several different exam end times in the Accommodated and Postponed rooms.  Therefore, students may be asked to sit in the same area or rows in the classroom for a particular exam to manage the different end times.  Arriving in the exam room 30 minutes prior to the start of the exam is required for you to make your seating arrangements.

The Records Office provides Proctors in Accommodated and Postponed rooms with a list of students along with the student’s exam envelopes.  The list and envelope will contain the student’s exam #, the course title, allotted time.  The envelope will contain a hard copy of the exam questions.  Attached to each exam, there will be an attendance card, exam receipt, instructions for multiple choice (if applicable) and instructions in case of technical difficulties with a laptop.

Proctors will use the student list provided by the Records Office to manage the timing of each individual exam.  In order to avoid distractions in the room, Proctors will NOT make any announcements once exams are started.  Instead, Proctors will notify each individual student when there are 10 minutes remaining by showing them a YELLOW “10 MINUTES REMAINING” card.  Once the 10 minutes have elapsed, the Proctor will show the student a RED “STOP TYPING.  EXAM IS OVER.” card.  Once shown the RED card, the student should exit and submit their exam to Exam4.  All materials should be returned to the exam envelope, except for the exam receipt.  The Proctor will sign the exam receipt and give the same to the student for the student’s records.  The student will give the envelope and enclosures to the Proctor.
