President Biden has nominated Robert C. Kopple Family Professor of Taxation Lily Batchelder for the position of assistant secretary for tax policy in the Treasury Department.

During the Obama administration, Batchelder served as majority chief tax counsel for the US Senate Committee on Finance, and later as deputy director of the White House National Economic Council and deputy assistant to the president. Before joining the NYU Law faculty, she was a tax associate at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. Batchelder focuses her scholarship and teaching on personal income taxes, business tax reform, wealth transfer taxes, retirement savings policy, and social insurance.

In January, the Tax Law Center at NYU Law (TLC) launched with Batchelder and Professor David Kamin ’09 as founding faculty directors. Kamin is currently deputy director of the National Economic Council in the Biden White House. Following US Senate confirmation, Batchelder will join Kamin on public service leave from the Law School. TLC Executive Director Chye-Ching Huang, a nationally recognized leader on tax law and policy, will oversee the center’s work while Kamin and Batchelder are on leave.
