JD/MBA Dual Degree Guide

Registration Procedures

To simplify the registration process, it is important that the JD/MBA student notify the dual degree advisor in both schools of registration plans before the beginning of each term. The School of Law has a specific Dual Degree Enrollment Form.

Students are not permitted to register for courses that overlap in dates and/or times during the regular fall and spring semester, or during any winter or summer session. Stern winter session courses that conflict with the start of the Law School spring semester will be posted on the Jacobson Leadership Program in Law and Business website.

Students should also be aware that grades for the Stern Spring “Doing Business In…” course may not be received in time for certification for the July bar exam. Additionally, students who participate in these courses in May of their graduating year will have their degrees conferred in September.

Students in the JD/MBA program may not take Law School courses Accounting for Lawyers or Corporate Finance.  We recommend that students do not begin taking Stern courses until they have officially begun the MBA program. In instances where a student has taken business courses prior to matriculation, there is a formal appeal process to request the allowance of a maximum of one course to count toward the MBA.

It is highly recommended that JD/MBA students spend their first two years at the Law school, taking Law courses. This will enable 1L and first semester 2L students to apply for the program, will optimize students’ extra-curricular opportunities, and is more consistent with the pattern of summer employment opportunities available.

The third year of the JD/MBA will be spent at Stern in the normal MBA1 core curriculum. Just as with conventional MBA students there are possibilities of waiving certain MBA core requirements depending on prior background and/or proficiency exam results. Students should consult Stern advisors in the usual way on this topic.

The fourth year of the program will be spent taking a mix of Law and Stern courses to satisfy the overall degree requirements while allowing students flexibility in pursuing advanced law and business courses. Normally students will register at Stern in the Fall semester paying Stern tuition and at the Law school in the Spring paying law school tuition. When a student is registered at Stern they must be registered for a majority of Stern credits (e.g. GB number classes). When a student is registered at the Law School they must be registered for a majority of Law credits (e.g. LW number classes).

Cross Listed Courses Certain courses, e.g. Law and Business of Corporate Governance, are cross-listed, i.e. carry both official LW and GB numbers. Students planning to take a cross-listed course must register for the course under the course number (LW or GB) corresponding to their school of residence for that semester. Further, students will be given credit for these courses toward the degree implied by the course number under which they register.

Cross-Registration during the Fourth Year of Study*

Students who register online via COURSES and Albert will be double-billed until their final schedule is confirmed with the dual degree advisor at both Law and Stern. Students must take a majority of credits at the school of residence.

*Students must be registered at Stern for one semester and Law at one semester in the fourth year of the JD/MBA program. We recommend that students register at Stern in Fall and Law in Spring; however, students may choose to do the opposite as long as the majority of their credits are in the school of “residence”. Students must register for cross-listed courses through the school of residence.

Fall Registration: Registration through Stern

A JD/MBA student must register through Stern for three of the eight full-time semesters in attendance. In order to register for courses in the Fall of the fourth year at both schools, in addition to completing the School of Law’s form, the student must:

  3. Meet with the dual degree advisor from both Law and Stern to confirm registration selections and the school in which he/she will be registered.
  4. Pay full tuition at the Stern rate for both business and law courses.

Spring Registration: Registration through the School of Law

A JD/MBA student must register through the School of Law for a minimum of five of the eight full- time semesters in attendance. In order to register for courses in the Spring of the fourth year at both schools, in addition to completing the School of Law’s form, the student must:

  1. Request Spring Law courses via COURSES during the applicable deadlines (anticipated to begin in mid-August).
  2. Request Stern courses for the Spring semester via Albert during the online lottery submission period (typically in October).
  3. Meet with the dual degree advisor from both Law and Stern to confirm registration selections and the school in which he/she will be registered.
  4. Pay full tuition at the School of Law rate for both law and business courses. The School of Law will confirm registration of business courses with Stern upon payment.

Additionally, each school outlines its policies regarding fees, grades, requirements, discipline, examinations, etc. The policies of both schools, except as modified by this manual, will apply to students in the dual degree program.
