The  Entrepreneurship & Venture Capital Program is hosting an in-person evening workshop to provide an introduction to early stage venture capital valuations and term sheets. The workshop will focus on understanding pre- and post-money valuations and how these terms are impacted by liquidation preferences, warrants, anti-dilution and related provisions. The Entrepreneurship & Venture Capital (EVC) Program at NYU Law (formerly the NYU Law Venture Fund), in partnership with the NYU Law Social Enterprise & Startup Law Group, hosted a session on how you can identify a startup idea. This was meant to be a primer on how to come up with a business idea and share strategies on where to go from that point. We were thrilled to welcome Sofia Viel (Head of Product) and Gonzalo Amuchástegui Mayoral (Co-Founder) from Amalgama, experts in design, methodology, and software development who shared best practices with us. The conversation was moderated by Eli Silverman '23.

On March 9, 2022, President Biden signed an Executive Order outlining the first “whole-of-government” approach to the benefits and risks posed by digital assets, which stopped short of making specific proposals for regulation. Following the Executive Order, the White House released its “First-Ever Comprehensive Framework for Responsible Development of Digital Assets” in September, summarizing the recommendations of various federal agencies’ research over the past six months. This panel explored the implications of the Biden administration’s recent “Comprehensive Framework" for regulation of crypto, which has already received some powerful pushback from the crypto industry.

The NYU Law Venture Fund and Social Enterprise & Startup Law group co-sponsored this conversation on the relationship between founders and venture capitalists featuring Jerry Ting, co-founder and CEO of Evisort, and Chase Roberts, principal at Vertex Ventures. Jerry and Chase discussed how founders and VCs can foster strong relationships over time and shared how their own relationship has evolved.

Earlier this year, Evisort—an emerging global leader in the legal tech space—announced $35M in Series B funding following a year of 4x revenue growth. The company is backed by leading strategic and institutional investors including Vertex Ventures. Legal tech companies have seen more than $1 billion in venture capital investments so far this calendar year, according to Crunchbase data.

 

The Power of Communities

What do Facebook, Peloton, and Nextdoor have in common? They are internet powerhouses that have grown through the power of communities. On Facebook alone, there are 70 million admins and moderators running active Facebook groups.

Online groups have grown leaps and bounds in the past decade, but their growth has accelerated at dizzying speed in the past year due to the pandemic. Without the ability to connect in person, many global citizens turned to online communities to create community and belongingness with others.

Virtual communities have not only been reserved for the big players. Many niche communities and startups have formed in the past few years. David Berkowitz, founder and CEO of Serial Marketer, and Lan Phan, founder and CEO of community of SEVEN, discussed the power of communities and their experience building them.
