Experiential Program Student Learning Outcomes
The NYU Law experiential learning program (1L Lawyering, clinics, externships, labs and simulation courses) is designed to ensure that every graduate has entry-level professional competence in the following foundational lawyering skills:
- Problem solving
- Interviewing
- Factual investigation
- Counseling
- Negotiation
- Collaboration
- Legal writing
- Understanding of litigation and other dispute-resolution procedures
- Cross-cultural competence and the ability to recognize and address bias and racism
- The development of a professional identity
The first-year Lawyering course develops the basics of these skills. In upper-level experiential courses, students deepen their abilities in some of these skills and in additional skills specific to the course subject-matter and design.
For a more detailed description of the goals of the experiential program and the content of the learning for each of these skills, see the Experiential Learning Program: Its Goals and Foundational Skills.
