Report Search Tips and Tricks

TIPS FOR OPTIMIZING YOUR SEARCH

WHEN SEARCHING BY PRACTICE AREA (Select from List on Sidebar)

1-   In summer 2017, we almost tripled the number of practice areas that interns can select to describe the work they did over their summer. Because the prior list of practice areas was not as comprehensive as the current one, and because some practice areas were grouped together, you may find that searching by practice area gives you very few results or many irrelevant ones. Searching by practice area will improve as we amass more intern reports.

2-  Here you will find a list of current practice areas and adjacent to some of these categories, you will see the name of other practice areas that may include relevant reports from 2016 and years prior to that.

WHEN SEARCHING FOR A PARTICULAR ORGANIZATION USE THE SEARCH BAR AND "QUOTE MARKS" (See Below for Index to All Organizations)

3-  Where public defenders are known in their area as the "[location] public defender" or the "public defender of [location]" search under "Public Defender," and then by city and/or county and/or state. Where organizations are known under the name "Legal Aid" or "Legal Aid Society," search under "Legal Aid" and then by city and/or county and/or state. And, where public defenders or organizations are well known under their name, try searching for them under that name e.g., Bronx Defenders; Bay Area Legal Aid.

4-  For the offices of federal defenders in the US, look under “Federal Defenders,” which will then be followed by the name of the US district in which they operate e.g., Federal Defenders - District of New Jersey.

5-  For federal government agencies and departments, search under US and then by the name of the agency e.g., US Securities & Exchange Commission, US Environmental Protection Agency. Where an agency's name begins with the word "federal," or "national" you generally will not need to search under "US."

6-  When searching for some state or local government agencies and prosecution offices, you can search by the type of agency and then by their location. For example, for intern reports for offices of state attorneys general, you should search for "Attorney General" followed by the state. For city attorneys," search by "City Attorney" followed by the city and state. For offices that call themselves law departments, look for "Law Department" followed by the city and state. For state and local prosecutor offices, search for "District Attorney" followed by the name county and state in which they operate.

7-  Please note that New York City boroughs/counties, Manhattan is New York County (and can also be found as “New York”), Brooklyn is Kings County, and Staten Island is Richmond County.

8-  For most New York City and New York State departments/agencies, look under NYC or NYS followed by the name of the department/agency.
