In Memoriam: Ronald Grossman

Ronald Grossman ’62, LLM ’65, a life trustee, philanthropist, and steadfast supporter of NYU Law, died on May 23, 2026. “Ron’s contributions to NYU Law were substantial,” said Dean Troy McKenzie ’00. “And his friendship meant a great deal to our Law School.”

As an undergraduate, Grossman attended Syracuse University, where he pitched for the school’s baseball team, but after an injury ended his playing career and his athletic scholarship, he finished his bachelor’s degree at NYU Stern School of Business and then earned both his JD and LLM from NYU Law. Grossman went on to a distinguished career in tax and corporate finance. He joined Freeport-McMoRan, a mining company based in New York City and New Orleans, as a tax assistant in 1962 and rose through the company ranks to become executive vice president and chief financial officer. After leaving Freeport, he established his own consulting company and served as chair of Rio Tinto Minera.

Grossman was a devoted supporter of the Law School. Together with his wife, Marilynn, he established the Ronald and Marilynn Grossman Scholarship and the Ronald and Marilynn Grossman Professor of Taxation, ensuring opportunities for generations of students to come. He served on the Dean’s Strategic Council and the Graduate Tax Advisory Board, and he was a member of the Weinfeld Program.

Grossman’s commitment to education and civic life has had broad impact. He was a leader in the UJA-Federation of New York; helped establish the Grossman Family Parent-Child Center in Hadera, Israel; and supported a range of educational, civic, and arts organizations in New York and New Orleans.
