Andrew Cohen, chief legal analyst for CBS News, compiled the year’s most significant law-related pieces, which also included Justice John Paul Stevens's review of Arthur T. Vanderbilt Professor of Law David Garland's much praised book, Peculiar Institution: America’s Death Penalty in an Age of Abolition.

The October 4 op-ed “Watch as We Make This Law Disappear,” which Friedman wrote with Slate.com’s Dahlia Lithwick, recounted five ways that the Supreme Court under Chief Justice John Roberts has moved to the right while convincing the public that it is not a conservative court. The piece attracted attention throughout the media and sparked debate on many legal blogs.
