JD Wait List Interview Program - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1.  Who will be invited to interview?

NYU Law has partnered with Kira Talent to provide an opportunity for applicants on our active wait list to interview via an online video. Our active wait list only includes those candidates who have responded to our wait list offer indicating their desire to remain under consideration.

2.  Am I required to conduct an interview?

No, the interview is optional.  However, we encourage you to complete this interview as it will provide us with more information about your strengths and potential contributions to our incoming class.

3.  Why is NYU Law conducting interviews for the active wait list applicant pool?

Interviews provide an opportunity for wait listed applicants to supplement the information included in the application. The interview will allow the Committee on Admissions to gain more insight into an applicant’s academic potential, scholarly achievement, community involvement, and work experience.

4.  How will the Office of JD Admissions evaluate the interview?

NYU Law is committed to taking a holistic approach when reviewing applications.  The online video interview will be added to your file.  Your responses to our questions will be taken into consideration as we evaluate candidates on our wait list throughout the summer.

5.  May I interview in person?

All interviews must be conducted online.

6.  When will interviews take place?

Candidates will be invited to interview after they have replied to our wait list notification email and confirmed that they wish to remain on our active wait list. Candidates must complete their online video interview within two weeks of receiving the invitation email.

7.  What is the deadline to complete the online interview?

Interviews must be completed within two weeks of receiving the invitation email.

8.  What do I need to conduct the interview?

You will need a desktop computer, laptop computer, mobile device, or tablet with a functioning webcam, microphone, and internet connection. For the best experience on the Kira Talent Platform, please use one of the browsers listed below on your laptop or desktop:

  • Google Chrome: Version ≥ 77 (our recommended browser)
  • Firefox: Version ≥ 69
  • Microsoft Edge (on Chromium): Version ≥ 76
  • Opera: Version ≥ 62

Please note that Safari and Brave are not supported at this time. If you are using Firefox as your browser, we recommend using wired headphones rather than a built-in microphone during your experience. You will need an updated version of your browser to complete Device Setup.

9.  May I use a mobile device or tablet to conduct the interview?

Yes, you may use a mobile device or tablet to conduct the interview. If you are using an Android device, please use Google Chrome as your browser. If you are using an iOS device, please use Safari as your browser. Note that other browsers such as Firefox, Edge, and Opera are not supported on mobile at this time.

10.  What if I need accessibility accommodations?

Kira assessments are designed to be accessible for all users, and comply with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 AA, including: closed captioning on recorded video content, support for up to 200% zoom and keyboard navigation, audio notifications for timed questions for screen readers. For the best experience in Kira, Chrome is recommended, especially for users relying on ARIA announcements and keyboard navigation.

11.  What should I expect during the online video interview?

The online video interview process is simple. The interview may be recorded on your own time.  You will be asked a question, given time to prepare your answer, and a set amount of time to respond. It should only take 20-30 minutes to complete.  You will need a desktop or laptop computer with a functioning webcam, microphone, and internet connection. The system allows for unlimited practice sessions, but once you start the formal interview, you must complete the process.

12.  How many questions will I be asked during the interview?

There are five questions. You will have 45 seconds to prepare your answer, and 1-2 minutes to respond.

13.  How should I prepare for the interview?

Please be sure to turn off any devices (like your phone) that might distract you. Find a clean, clutter-free environment where you can set up. Arrange for light to be in front of you, not behind you. Ensure that your microphone, webcam, and internet connection are functioning. We recommend utilizing the practice session to familiarize yourself with the process.

14.  Will I be able to practice?

The system allows for unlimited practice sessions.  However, once you start the formal interview, you must complete the process.

Practice questions may not be similar to actual interview questions, but they will help you become comfortable with the online video interview process. Each practice session has 2 questions. You may complete as many practice sessions as you need.

15.  May I re-record my responses?

Unfortunately, no. Like an in-person interview, you only have one opportunity to respond to each question once you start the formal interview. This allows us to see your candid responses.

16.  Is there a dress code?

There is no dress code, but you should wear attire that is professional and presentable. We recommend choosing business casual attire, such as a dress shirt, blouse, sweater, or long sleeve shirt.

17.  What happens after the interview?

As long as you are on the wait list you are under active consideration for any of the seats that become available in the class. Members of the Committee on Admissions will review your interview in the context of your overall application.

If spaces in the class become available, the Committee will review the applications of those who have expressed an interest in remaining on the wait list and select an appropriate number for admission. This process will continue as necessary until classes begin.

OTHER TIPS:

  • Update your software and disable notifications. If you receive any notifications from email, social media, games, or other apps, please turn them off temporarily before starting your interview.
  • Utilize the practice questions so you may get comfortable with the online format.
  • Charge your device. To avoid running out of battery halfway through your interview, please ensure your device is connected to a power source.
  • Set the scene and adjust your lighting. We recommend a well-lit room and a plain background.
  • Find some quiet time. If possible, ask your family, colleagues, or roommates to allow you to complete the process without interruption. Let them know that they should not disturb you for 30-60 minutes while you complete your interview.
  • Be yourself. The Committee on Admissions is using your interview to get to know you better.
