Robe-ust (Dis)agreement?: Judges Sullivan (CA2) and Restrepo (CA3) on How Advocacy Experience in the Criminal Justice System Informs Judging

Please join the Federalist Society for a conversation between Judge Richard J. Sullivan of the Second Circuit (Trump appointee) and Judge L. Felipe Restrepo of the Third Circuit (Obama appointee). Judge Sullivan, who served as a federal prosecutor, and Judge Restrepo, who served as an Assistant Federal Defender, will explore how a judge’s prior experience as an advocate in the criminal justice system informs his or her approach to judging.

Speakers:

Judge Richard J. Sullivan was sworn in as a United States Circuit Court Judge for the Second Circuit in October 2018. Before that, Judge Sullivan served for eleven years as a United States District Judge for the Southern District of New York. Prior to becoming a judge, he served as the General Counsel and Managing Director of Marsh Inc., the world's leading risk management and insurance brokerage firm. From 1994 to 2005, he served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Southern District of New York, where he was Chief of the International Narcotics Trafficking Unit and Director of the New York/New Jersey Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force. Prior to joining the U.S. Attorney's Office, he was a litigation associate at Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz in New York and a law clerk to the Honorable David M. Ebel of the United States Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit. He is a graduate of Yale Law School, the College of William & Mary, and Chaminade High School on Long Island. 

Judge Luis Felipe Restrepo has served as a United States Court of Appeals Judge for the Third Circuit since 2016. Judge Restrepo previously served as a United States District Court Judge for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania from 2013 to 2016. Judge Restrepo served as a United States Magistrate Judge for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania from 2006 to 2013. Judge Restrepo was a partner at Krasner & Restrepo from 1993 to 2006. From 1990 to 1993, he served as an Assistant Federal Defender in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, and from 1987 to 1990 as an Assistant Defender with the Defender Association of Philadelphia. Judge Restrepo received his J.D. from Tulane Law School in 1986 and his B.A from the University of Pennsylvania in 1981.
