Public defenders in New York staged a series of strikes this summer, with some resulting in considerable improvements in pay, benefits, and working conditions. This event will explore the concerns that led to the strike, the effort that went into planning the day-to-day of these picket lines, the hardships legal workers faced during the strike, the strategy and tactics that were employed to put pressure on management, and takeaways from the success of these strikes. We will also discuss the structural issues facing public defenders and the importance of unions in protecting the future of the profession. This event is open to the student body.
The speakers for this event include, Kiana Phillips, family defense attorney at Neighborhood Defender Service of Harlem, Benjamin Mackin, criminal defense attorney at Bronx Defenders, a representative of Brooklyn Defender Services, and Julianna Simms, family defense attorney at Brooklyn Defender Services.
This lunch panel is being organized by CLS LPE. We will stream and watch the event from NYU; no RSVP needed, just BYOL!
