About Non-Violent Communication: Nonviolent Communication (also known as NVC or compassionate communication) is a method of communicating created by psychologist Marshall Rosenberg based on universal human feelings and needs. The purpose of NVC is to create empathy and to promote cooperative solutions that meet peoples’ needs.
NVC and Lawyering: NVC training helps you hear and respond to the underlying basic needs of others, using non-judgmental language. NVC training can help you professionally in communicating with clients, colleagues, and opposing counsel, but can also immensely help you in your personal life. NVC can help you connect with friends and families, and provide guidance for challenging conversations or advocating for yourself. The last few years have demonstrated how polarized and isolating our current reality is. This is an invitation to step into real and honest communication with those around you.
About our teacher, Roberta Wall: Roberta Wall, NYU Law '86, transitioned from a career and activist as a civil rights attorney in NYC to a global trainer in Nonviolent Communication (NVC). For more than 20 years, she has shared NVC on 5 continents, focussing on the Mideast. She integrates mindfulness and many other modalities in her work.
She is thrilled to return to NYU Law to share the skills and practices of Nonviolent Communication. NVC is a method of framing and hearing communication that aligns with the speaker's intent and honesty and also creates connection and understanding with others.
Roberta earned her J.D.from New York University School of Law, where she was awarded the prestigious Root Tilden scholarship for her commitment to the public interest. As an attorney and instructor, Roberta facilitated hundreds of mediated court settlements and private conflicts. Roberta has completed hundreds of hours of NVC trainings and has trained and mentored Nonviolent Communication trainers on
five continents in coaching, mediation, listening and healing. She trained directly with Marshall Rosenberg, founder of Nonviolent Communication.
Roberta uses her decades of experience as a civil rights lawyer, mediator, coach, teacher, parent and activist in service of peaceful resolution of conflict, individual and organizational growth, and community and spiritual development.
