NYU School of Law invites you to The James Madison Lecture on Monday, October 26, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. in Vanderbilt Hall, Greenberg Lounge, located at 40 Washington Square South. The lecture, "What the Rule of Law Means to Me" will be presented by Judge Patricia Millett, US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
A shared commitment to the rule of law has underpinned our system of government for 250 years. Since ancient times, civilizations have viewed the rule of law as a safeguard against tyranny and despotism that prevents rulers from governing by will alone. Our Constitution bears out this fundamental principle through the separation of powers. Reflecting on the separation of powers throughout our nation’s history, Judge Millett considers how the rule of law is embedded in the proper functioning of our constitutional checks and balances.
This in-person event has been approved to offer one New York State CLE credit in the category of Areas of Professional Practice. The credit is both transitional and non-transitional; it is appropriate for both experienced and newly appointed attorneys.
