Concerns about cancel culture and the tolerance of diverse viewpoints have become increasingly prominent in recent years—developments that, fairly or not, can affect your legal career. As a law student, you may find yourself navigating complex questions about professional identity, personal expression, and institutional expectations.
How should aspiring lawyers think about free speech, intellectual diversity, and reputational risk? What does it mean to build a career while remaining authentic to your views and values?
David Lat is one of the nation’s leading commentators on legal careers. He clerked for a federal judge, practiced in Biglaw, and served as a federal prosecutor, before spending two decades covering the legal profession as a journalist—first as the founder and managing editor of Above the Law, and now as the founder of Original Jurisdiction, a Substack newsletter and podcast. Between ATL and OJ, David also worked as a legal recruiter, gaining additional insight into how employers evaluate candidates.
Join David for a conversation on navigating the legal profession in an age of polarization. Following brief introductory remarks, most of the event will be devoted to Q&A—so come with lots of questions. We hope to see you there!
