10:00am PANEL DISCUSSION: DEVELOPMENT, INNOVATION AND THE PRESSURES OF GEOPOLITICS
This panel will explore the pressures on developing countries that are trying to use competition law and policy as an important instrument for both inclusiveness and competitiveness, but are faced with new strategies of the developed world to entrench “their own” businesses in the name of growth, innovation, or nationalism. Particularly in the US, we see a withdrawal from multilateralism and the use of trade to affect competition law abroad. The panel will discuss how these pressures may affect innovation incentives and technological development, both from the point of view of developing countries that need access to gatekeepers’ platforms to participate in the global economy, and from the point of view of the developed world keen to win the global race in AI and new technologies.
