Administrator Spotlight: Marisol Sanchez

Associate Director for Operations and Administrative Services

Marisol Sanchez

Tell us the story of how you came to work at NYU Law? Were you always in your current position?

My professional journey at NYU started during my senior year at Norman Thomas High School when I became a seasonal office assistant for the Facilities department within the School of Professional Studies (SPS). The opportunity arose from a teacher’s recommendation, opening the door to what I never imagined would be a 20+ year tenure at NYU.

Post-graduation, I transitioned into a permanent role at NYU within the SPS Facilities department, serving as an administrative aide. In 2003, my mentor Lillian Zalta encouraged me to apply for the role of administrative aide in NYU Law Operations. Since then, my journey within the Law School has been a woven tapestry of growth and development, advancing from administrative aide to coordinator, then assistant director, and currently serving as the associate director for the past eight years.

What’s a typical day for you like?

In the dynamic world of the Facilities department, no two days are alike. Each day unfolds with its unique narrative. I might have to jump between tasks like furnishing offices with new furniture to addressing sudden building leaks. Every day is unpredictable, but it definitely keeps me on my toes.

What’s the most challenging thing about what you do? And what’s the most rewarding?

The most demanding aspect of my role is dealing with unforeseen building issues, spanning from leaks and HVAC troubles to sudden outages. Yet in the face of these challenges our department assumes the role of problem solvers, ensuring a swift and effective resolution.

The challenges also reveal the most rewarding moments, where many faculty, administrators, and staff show their utmost appreciation and gratitude for our department’s services to the Law School. These moments of acknowledgment can be incredibly rewarding, serving as motivation and validation.

What do you wish you’d known about the Law School on your first day of working here?

On my first day working here, I was filled with anxiety transitioning from SPS to NYU Law. I wish I had known immediately that NYU Law is a workplace that fosters a strong sense of community and collaboration. It took some time for me to embrace openness and forge essential connections that would have eased my transition. Over time, I discovered that NYU fosters a warm and inclusive environment, which well exceeded my expectations.

What is your favorite spot on campus, and why?

My favorite spot on campus is Washington Square Park. This setting encapsulates the essence of New York City, bringing together characters from different countries and cultures. The park is a dynamic and inclusive environment. A multifaceted space for people to unwind, socialize, and express themselves in various ways. It is a testament to the park’s role as a communal hub where individuals from different walks of life come together to share in the enjoyment of the outdoor setting. The park never fails to captivate. It consistently leaves me in a state of awe.
