Q&A with Kevin Lau
Administrative Aid, Finance
Tell us the story of how you came to work at NYU Law? Were you always in your current position?
I came to work at NYU Law after working at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, where my primary responsibilities included event coordination and a variety of financial administrative tasks. I didn’t see a long-term future there, so I began searching for my next employment opportunity. Among the several places where I interviewed at was NYU Law and I knew immediately when I met former Associate Dean and CFO, Kate Polson, that NYU Law was where I hoped to work next. I was elated to hear back from Kate that I got the job and I started at NYU Law in July 2023.
What’s a typical day for you like?
The typical day for me starts with waking up early and taking the bus and the subway from Queens to get to the office around 8:00 a.m. Once in the office, I settle in and begin answering emails. As the rest of my team comes in at 9:00 a.m, I enjoy greeting them with a “Good morning” as they walk past my desk and catching up with them shortly after. Throughout the day, I continue answering emails, complete different finance-related tasks, and converse with colleagues in my office suite and neighboring office suites.
What’s the most challenging thing about what you do? And what’s the most rewarding?
The most challenging thing about what I do is multitasking the different financial administrative tasks I have to do on a daily basis and following up with individuals to get things completed. The most rewarding thing about what I do is definitely being able to help the members of the Law School community with a variety of inquiries and serving as a resource to them.
What do you wish you’d known about the Law School on your first day of working here?
On my first day of working here, I wish I had known how collaborative the Finance Team at the Law School is with not just the numerous departments and centers throughout the school, but also with the University’s Procurement & Payables department. Knowing this on my first day of working here would’ve encouraged me to connect with more individuals in the University’s Procurement & Payables department to accelerate my growth and institutional knowledge.
What is your favorite spot on campus, and why?
My favorite spot on campus is the 12th floor terrace at D’Agostino Hall! It’s a great spot to view the city skyline and get some fresh air.
