Administrator Spotlight: Katherine Gomes
Administrative Coordinator, Office of the Dean
Tell us the story of how you came to work at NYU Law? Were you always in your current position?
Prior to joining NYU Law, I worked in the Office of the Provost at Boston College. I received my undergraduate degree from BC, after which I decided to continue on there in a professional capacity. But I’ve always had a special place in my heart for New York City, so after working for a few years at BC, I decided I wanted to take the leap and move here.
The only jobs for which I applied were at NYU, and I was hired as the administrative aide in the NYU Law Dean’s Office in July of 2022. In January of 2023, I was promoted to the role of administrative coordinator for the Institutional Events team, which is my current position.
What’s a typical day for you like?
My typical work day starts at 9:00 a.m., Starbucks coffee in hand. I love to have a quick morning chat with all of my colleagues in the Dean’s Office before hunkering down. I spend a lot of my time assisting clients who are hoping to reserve space. My team handles all space requests for both classroom and event spaces at the law school. I am also heavily involved in governance matters at our weekly faculty meetings, so I take time to analyze our policies and curate the weekly agenda.
Once the work day is over, sometimes my team and I will stay later to support any events sponsored by the Dean’s Office.
What’s the most challenging thing about what you do? And what’s the most rewarding?
The most challenging thing about my role is working with many different platforms for space requests and reservations. On the other hand, the most rewarding aspect is the gratitude and appreciation we garner from clients when they see how much work we put into making their event a success!
What do you wish you’d known about the Law School on your first day of working here?
I wish I had known the plethora of opportunities and events that not only the Law School has to offer, but the entire University. There is always something interesting happening at NYU!
What is your favorite spot on campus, and why?
I would say my favorite spot is the courtyard outside of Vanderbilt Hall. On sunny days, I like to take my lunch hour there and people-watch.
