Administrator Spotlight: Daryl Canale
IT Procurement Agent
Tell us the story of how you came to work at NYU Law?
After 20-plus years in fashion, I took time off to start a family. Once my daughter was old enough for school, I was ready to go back to work but definitely didn’t want the fashion work schedule. I needed to find something with good benefits, security, stability, and that would enable a healthy work/life balance. A friend of mine mentioned that there was an opening in the IT department at the Law School. She thought it would be a perfect fit for me, so I applied, got the job, and have been here ever since.
What’s a typical day for you like?
I come into the office every day as there is always a new challenge—deliveries, problems to solve etc.—and it helps for me to be on the ground. I also genuinely enjoy interaction with people, both within my group as well as outside. My room is always a welcome place to visit and people know that. I answer emails and check with our different departments and divisions to see if they need anything (media services, helpdesk, special events, Technology Development Group). In addition to purchasing equipment such as computers and peripherals for faculty, staff and administrators, I also help maintain the public printers for the students in the common areas, providing toner/paper and fixing issues. In addition, we have a candy basket that I replenish, keeping everyone happy!
What is your favorite spot on campus, and why?
I do like the courtyard in Vanderbilt Hall, especially when the seasons are changing. It’s nice to sit out there and have a coffee or just chat. It’s a great place close by for a quick break.
What’s the most challenging thing about what you do?
NYU has recently implemented a variety of new systems and programs, so learning the ins and outs of those has been challenging. And what’s the most rewarding? The recognition I receive from my boss and my group when I help them with something. They are always grateful for the work that I do, and I know they appreciate me.
What do you wish you’d known about the Law School on your first day of working here?
I wish I knew or even thought about a job in education sooner. This is one of the best jobs I’ve had.
