What follows is a guide to our residential facilities. Unless otherwise indicated, all area codes are Manhattan's 212. If members of the Department of Residence Services can assist you, please call us at (212) 998-6510, email us a email@example.com or stop by the Office of Residential Life in Mercer Residence or the Office of Facilities Services in D'Agostino hall. We hope you will find this guide useful, and we look forward to being of assistance to you during your stay.
ATM machines are located in the lobby of Mercer Residence and in the D'Agostino Hall Commons.
Cots for overnight guests in D'Agostino Hall and Mercer Residence are available for rental:
- Reservations must be made in advance in the building office, Monday through Friday, between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Reservations cannot be made via fax, email, or phone.
- Cost: $5 per night (Monday through Thursday) and $10 on Friday (includes weekend). No linen service is provided. Cash only.
A secure bicycle storage room is located adjacent to the front lobby of Mercer Residence. Bicycles may only be stored in the Mercer Residence bike room, if approved, or in resident apartments; bicycles chained or stored any other place within the building or on building property will be removed and discarded.
- D'Agostino Hall: A general bulletin board is located by 1st landing in mezzanine level. Another bulletin board can be found in the sub-basement.
- Mercer Residence: A general bulletin board is located on the main floor across from the freight elevator. Bulletins from the Department of Residence Services are located on the board next to the elevators.
Both D'Agostino Hall and Mercer Residence are wired to receive satellite cable television transmission from NYU-TV. Residents must provide their own television sets. After hooking your television to the building's cable, you may adjust the television to receive transmissions.
Please note the following:
- There is a switch on your television that is marked CATV. Turn the switch to this setting, or
- Using your television menu (refer to your owner's manual), set your antenna to CABLE or CATV and choose autoprogram channel scanning, if available. Refer to your cable television manual for information on supplies and hook-up options.
Residents of 230 Sullivan Street and 130 MacDougal Street may personally contract with an outside provider for cable TV service.
All residents/visitors must check-out by 10:00 a.m. on the date you have contracted to depart. If you wish to depart at another time or date, please come to the Office of Residential Life in Mercer during business hours to inquire if a special arrangement may be accommodated.
Residents are responsible for the cleaning and care of their apartments. Vacuum cleaners are available through the Door Attendant. All other cleaning supplies and materials must be provided by residents. Failure to keep the apartment reasonably clean and orderly will result in forfeiture of the privilege to live in School of Law housing.
Community Facilities and Study Rooms
- D'Agostino Hall: A number of modern banquet, lecture and seminar rooms are available for outside conferences and meetings. The D'Agostino Hall Law Commons is a large, open, loft-like space, that offers students lounge type seating as well as round tables with chairs for group study. In addition, there are fifteen computers and individual hookups for personal computers located around the room.
- Mercer Residence: A television, piano, and video game room are in the basement. A game room with a pool table, dart board and a ping-pong table is located on the ground floor. Computers are located in the lobby and on the 7th floor, and 4 study rooms are located on the 8th floor and one study room is located on the 3rd floor.
If you wish to reserve a room (Lipton Hall, Lipton Foyer, Faculty Club, D'Agostino Hall 14th Floor Terrace, Mercer Terace, or the Mercer Pub) for a private function, please contact:
The D'Agostino Hall Commons, Mercer Game Room, D'Agostino Hall 12th Floor Terrace, and the Study Rooms cannot be reserved. Mercer 312 and the Mercer 8th Floor Study Rooms are for quiet study only.
All residents of D'Agostino Hall and Mercer Residence are provided with a compost bin in their apartment. All compostable materials collected in this bin (see list below) should be placed in the green compost bin located in the refuse closets.
Compost the following items:
- All Food (Fruit, Vegetables, Chees, Meat, Poultry, Seafood, Bread, Rice, Pasta, Bones, etc.)
- Coffee Grounds and Filters
- Tea Bags
- Food Soiled Paper (Napkins, Towels, Plates, etc.)
- Paper Bags and Newspaper Used to Wrap Food Scraps or Line the Provided Apartment Compost Pails
Computers and laser printers are located in the lobby and on the 7th floor of Mercer Residence and in Room 309 and the Commons of D'Agostino Hall. The computer room in the Law Library is available only to NYU School of Law students. For more information about computing at the Law School, contact the Department of Information and Technology Services.
To request toner or paper for the computer labs, please contact the Front Desk.

Residents may decorate their apartment walls with pictures and other wall decorations, using blue tape and small nails. Any type of hanger that will produce permanent holes or marks in the walls is not permitted. Any damage to painted surfaces, including those caused by glue or large nails, is assessed against the occupants of the apartment. Residents are not permitted to paint their rooms; however, Mercer residents should notify the Office of Residential Life (all others, contact the Office of Facilities Services in D'Agostino) if your room is in need of painting and your room will be added to our painting list.
Residents must pick up all deliveries in the Lobby. The Door Attendant or delivery person will contact you using the University phone system when a delivery has arrived for you. The Door Attendant will not call cell phones. Please note that if the resident does not answer (not home, online via dial up, etc.) the delivery person will not be permitted to enter the building and come to the apartment. Please plan accordingly.
130 MacDougal Street and 230 Sullivan Street have a buzzer system.
Door Attendant/Front Desk
The Door Attendant at the Front Desk of Mercer and D'Agostino can help you with vacuum cleaners, lock-out keys, moving bins, packages too large for your mailbox, and repair requests. If you have a problem, please feel free to notify the hall office during business hours, or the Door Attendant who is available 24 hours a day.
The Door Attendant will contact you on your room phone to announce a guest. Building Staff will not go up to your apartment to announce a guest and will not contact residents via cell phone.Please note that if the resident does not answer (not home, online via dial up, etc.) the guest(s) will not be permitted to enter the building. Building Staff will not go up to your apartment to announce a guest and will not contact residents via cell phone. Please plan accordingly.
130 MacDougal Street and 230 Sullivan Street have a buzzer system.
Electricity and Electrical Outlets
Each bathroom and kitchen is equipped with a ground-fault electric outlet. Should the moisture level in the bathroom be too high, this outlet will shut off. Once the moisture level returns to normal, the outlet may be reset.
Please turn off all air conditioners, fans and other appliances if you are not at home during the day as this will conserve energy and help reduce the risk of power failure and/or fires.

Note: If you or someone living with you has a disability which will hinder your egress in an emergency, please let the Office of Residence Services know so we will be prepared to assist you in a crisis.
Emergency and Fire Safety Procedures
Residents should be fully aware of Emergency and Fire Evacuation Procedures and the location of building exits. If there is a fire or you must evacuate, leave the building in an orderly way to prevent exit routes from becoming congested. Familiarize yourselves with fire stations (red pull-boxes) in hallways and learn all routes out of the building so you can use the best route if an emergency or fire occurs. Mercer and D'Agostino residents should refer to the fire procedure information posted on the inside of your apartment doors.
Note: If your apartment smoke alarm activates because of burned food DO NOT OPEN the apartment door to the hallway as smoke will cause a building-wide alarm and avacuation. Open your bedroom doors and windows, and fan the smoke detector with a newspaper or other item until it stops sounding.
An exterminating service representative visits each building once a week. On these visits, a NYU building staff member accompanies the representative. If you need this service, please contact your hall office so that we may put your apartment on the list. In addition, roach traps are placed in each apartment twice a year.
230 Sullivan Street and 130 MacDougal Street are managed by Cushman & Wakefield. Requests for extermination should be submitted online, via email, or by telephone (212-998-1001) to the Client Services Center.

Visitors must be announced from the Front Desk or present a Guest Pass. Residents may have overnight guests but, in fairness to your neighbors and any apartmentmates, you must follow some established rules. You must be in attendance at all times when you have a guest. You may have overnight guests for a total of no more than seven nights per 30-day period. (A particular guest may be a guest in Law School housing for no more than seven nights per 30 day period.) The resident/licensee will need to obtain a Guest Pass for each guest, each visit; you can do this simply by stopping by the office in Mercer Residence or D'Agostino Hall. You will need written permission from your apartmentmate(s) if you are having more than one guest at a time or if your guest is staying more than three consecutive nights; both require authorization from the administration.
Please note: Guest authorizations cannot be made by telephone, email or fax.
Mercer and D'Agostino living rooms and bedrooms have units providing cooling in the summer and heating in the winter. Air conditioning and heating cannot be run simultaneously. The wall-mounted thermostat in each room can be set as follows (also see the decal on the unit for instructions): the fan speed can be set to off, low, medium, high, or automatic. The temperature can be set between 68-74 degrees in the winter months. Adjustments to the temperature settings are made seasonally and residents are notified accordingly. In addition, when unoccupied the temperature in apartments can lower to a minimum of 55 degrees in the winter, and rise to a maximum of 84 degrees in the summer. This is done as an energy savings measure, and is tied into a smart Building Management System which monitors temperatures to insure a maximum 15 minute recovery time when reoccupied.

NYU assumes no responsibility for your personal property. This includes property lost, stolen, or damaged in academic and residential buildings.
As noted in the housing license, each resident is responsible for his or her personal property; therefore, it is suggested that residents carry property insurance. Renters' or tenants' insurance is a form of personal property insurance which can provide a year of coverage at a reasonable cost.
If you do not already have a policy that will cover lost or damaged property, you may choose to purchase an insurance policy, some of which are especially designed for university students. You may wish to review the CSI Insurance Agency, Inc. brochure.
One apartment key is issued to each resident upon arrival. A temporary guest key is available for a refundable $5.00 deposit and can be obtained during office hours while getting a Guest Pass, Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Lost keys (room or mail) should be reported to your hall office immediately. For security reasons, your lock will be changed (at a charge of $50) if you have lost a key or not returned a temporary guest key.
Residents who are locked out may obtain a "lock-out key" from the Door Attendant (residents of 130 MacDougal Street and 230 Sullivan Street should go to the D'Agostino Hall Front Desk) by presenting proper ID; the "lock-out key" must be returned to the Door Attendant within 15 minutes or a $50 fee will be assessed.
The NYU School of Law residences provide do-it-yourself laundry facilities. The laundry facilities are open for use daily at 7:00 a.m. and close at 11:30 p.m.
- D'Agostino Hall: A laundry room is located on the 12th floor by the mini-terrace. It is equipped with washers, dryers, and a Smart Card Transaction Station. Instructions on how to use the Smart Card-accessed machines are located in the laundry rooms
- Mercer Residence: Laundry rooms are located on the 7th and 17th floors. Facilities include washers, dryers, and a Smart Card Transaction Stations. Instructions on how to use the Smart Card-accessed machines are posted in the laundry rooms.
Laundry Room Remote Monitoring in D'Agostino Hall
You can “visit” the D’Agostino Hall laundry room without leaving your apartment. Machine (Washer and Dryer) availability can be checked using the internet and/or phone. An email alert or text message can be requested when machines are available or when your laundry is done. Just follow some simple steps and avoid wasted trips to the laundry room.

Incoming mail may be picked up from your mailbox. C.O.D. items cannot be accepted. Packages which are too large for individual mailboxes are kept at the Front Desk. Residents will be notified when they have received a package.

Maintenance and Repairs
Mercer Residence & D'Agostino Hall:
Should any appliance, furniture or other furnishing supplied by NYU School of Law need repair, residents of Mercer and D'Agostino Hall must complete a Maintenance Repair slip online via the Web based Service Request System. The handyman on duty will then be contacted to correct the problem. Repairs to appliances, furnishings or equipment supplied by NYU are the responsibility of the management alone. No reimbursement to a resident or a vendor performing repair services is allowed. In case of an emergency (overflowing toilet, smell of gas, etc.) contact the Front Desk.

These buildings are managed by Cushman & Wakefield. Requests for service should be submitted online, via email, or by telephone (212-998-1001) to the Client Services Center. Note that you may contact the D'Agostino Hall Front Desk 24 hours a day (212-998-6502) in the event of a facilities emergency (for example, flooding or no heat). Additionally, lock-out keys for all apartments are located at D'Agostino Hall.

Residents are reminded that social gatherings in apartments should be conducted in a way that is considerate of roommates and neighbors. Parties should end by 11:00 p.m. Monday-Thursday. On Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays or on evenings immediately preceding holidays, the deadline is 1:00 a.m. Parties may never be conducted in the hallways. For the consideration of your neighbors, noise (music, etc.) from your apartment should not be heard in adjoining apartments. Quiet hours may be added during exam periods or for other special circumstances. Twenty-four hour courtesy hours are always in effect.
As per the Housing License, students in Law School housing are not permitted pets. Visitors and guests may not bring pets into the building.
A copy machine is located in the Law School Library in Vanderbilt Hall.
Recycling bins are located in the Mercer Residence Refuce Closets, by the elevators in D'Agostino Hall, outside of 230 Sullivan Street and in the basement of 130 MacDougal Street.
Mercer Residence and D'Agostino Hall have single-stream recycling. All recyclables (glass, paper, plastic, metal, etc.) can be placed in the recycling bins.
- D'Agostino Hall and Mercer Residence: A refuse closet is located on each floor in Mercer and D'Agostino. All trash and garbage should be thrown down the chute, except newspapers, bottles, books, cans and bulk items. Appropriately marked bins are available for recyclable items.
- Residents of 230 Sullivan Street must take their trash and recycling outside and place it in the containe located in front of the building.
- Residents of 130 MacDougal Street must take their trash and recycling to the basement.
Housing rent payments may be made online via e-check, by phone or in person. Bills are processed and distributed by the University's Bursar's Office, located at 25 West 4 Street.
Room Furnishings and Supplies
Please be prepared to bring a desk lamp (it is recommended that Mercer residents also bring a floor lamp as there is no overhead lighting), linens, pillows, blankets, kitchen utensils, garbage can, etc.
Halogen lamps are prohibited in NYU School of Law housing.
Bed sizes for linens are as follows: D'Agostino Hall type L1 apartments (full); 130 MacDougal Street (full); L2 apartments utilized for family housing (full); 240 Mercer Street type A, D, and E apartments (queen); all other locations have extra long 80" x 36" mattresses. This furniture is not removable due to storage limitations.

All residents must show a valid NYU ID Card with a building sticker in order to enter the residence hall.
To activate the showerhead in the bathroom, turn on the faucet(s) and push in the horizontal "diverter stem," which sends the water up to the showerhead. To turn the shower off, do not pull the stem forward. When the water is shut off, it will release automatically.
The smoke detector in your apartment is designed to sound an early warning of fire, before toxic gases, flames and heat reach dangerous levels. It requires no adjustment, is self-contained and self-monitoring and has been tested by Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. If the alarm is activated, it will turn off automatically once the condition no longer exists.
NYU is a smoke-free campus. Smoking in all residence halls is prohibited.. Any resident or guest wishing to smoke must exit the building to do so and may only smoke in the designated smoking areas. Smoking is also prohibited on all terraces and balconies. Those wishing to smoke must do so in the designated smoking areas outside of the building.
Violations of the smoking policy will be handled within the School of Law disciplinary system.
There is no storage available.
Manhattan Mini-Storage: This local storage company will rent 5' x 5' x 4' lockers on a monthly basis. Call (212) 255-0482, and/or check the phone directory for listings of other area storage companies.
Your apartment is equipped with a stove with valve handles which must be pushed in before turning. Almost all these appliances have an electric ignition so there is no pilot light or need to strike a match to ignite a burner. To turn on a burner, push the valve handle in and turn in to the lite position. You will hear a click and an electric spark. Once the burner is lit, turn the valve handle slightly until the sparking stops and adjust the flame to the desired height. To operate the oven, turn the dial counter-clockwise to the desired temperature setting. There is a delay of 45 seconds before the main burner ignites.
D'Agostino Hall and Mercer Residence are part of the NYU Telephone Service. Telephone numbers are provided to students before arrival. This service includes unlimited local calls, call waiting, and voice mail. Please see the Student Telephone and Voicemail Web site for further information. Residents must purchase long-distance calling cards.
Residents of 230 Sullivan Street and 130 MacDougal Street may personally contract for phone service.
Outdoor terraces in D'Agostino Hall and Mercer Residence are available for social functions. Any resident wishing to rent a terrace or any other building facility should contact the Office of Conferencing & Special Events by calling 998-6117. Reservations are required and all functions must end by 11:00 p.m. -- without exception.
- D'Agostino Hall: Candy/Vending on the Mezzanine level. Soda machine in the sub-basement. Take the mini-elevator from the mezzanine level to SB.
- Mercer Residence: Candy and soda machine in the basement, along with video and pinball machines.
Exhaust fans are installed in each apartment. Bathrooms are mechanically ventilated by a system that has been tested and calibrated to provide adequate turnover of air.
Windows in all apartments have window stops installed on the window frame of the sliding portion of the window to restrict the distance that this window can be opened. Removal of the window-stop is prohibited. All apartment windows are cleaned twice a year by a professional window cleaning service. Residents will be notified in advance of the scheduled window-cleaning dates.
