How to Apply

Choose a Program
Prospective students are permitted to apply for only one degree or certificate program during an annual application cycle (September to June).

Review Application Policies
All prospective students applying to the Graduate Division for any program, whether interested in study in New York City, in Singapore, or online, must submit an online application and abide by all policies described in the application instructions.

All prospective students applying to the LL.M., E-LL.M., J.S.D., and A.P.C. programs are required to use the Law School Admission Council (LSAC) LL.M. Credential Assembly Service, which includes the NYU Law Electronic Application, the Document Assembly Service, and the International Transcript and Authentication Service (if applicable). To register, visit the LSAC website. All applicants are strongly advised to register for the LL.M. Credential Assembly Service well in advance of the application deadline. LSAC recommends applicants register four to six weeks before their first application deadline.

The application fee is $60, payable by credit card only via the LSAC website. Application fees are non-refundable and will not be credited toward tuition if an applicant is offered admission. The Committee on Graduate Admissions does not waive application fees to the Graduate Division, however, the Committee has reduced the application fee this year—from $75 to $60—because of its requirement that applicants use the LSAC LL.M. Credential Assembly Service. The reduction in the application fee is intended to off-set the law school report fee, which LSAC charges in order to send an applicant’s materials to NYU.

LSAC LL.M. Credential Assembly Service
The LL.M. Credential Assembly Service simplifies the application process by centralizing the collection of application materials, and distributing them in an electronic report to all law schools to which an applicant applies. Applicants, particularly those applying to multiple law schools, benefit in using this service by submitting the required application materials only once to LSAC. NYU’s receipt of the application and required materials electronically from LSAC allows for quicker and more efficient processing for all applicants.
All applicants must submit the application and all required materials to LSAC, by the appropriate application deadline. Important Note: applicants do not need to submit their materials early in order for LSAC to have prepared the law school report for transmission to NYU by the application deadline; instead, applicants must ensure that all their materials arrive to LSAC by the appropriate application deadline. Nevertheless, all applicants are strongly advised to register for the LL.M. Credential Assembly Service well in advance of the application deadline.

The Committee on Graduate Admissions requires applicants with domestic education credentials (those who hold, or are earning, a J.D. from a law school in the U.S. or Puerto Rico) to complete and submit the NYU Law Electronic Application via the LSAC website, and to purchase the Document Assembly Service.

The Committee requires applicants with foreign education credentials (those who earned their first law degree outside of the U.S.) to complete and submit the NYU Electronic Application via the LSAC website, and to purchase both the Document Assembly Service and the International Transcript Authentication and Evaluation Service.

Waiver of LSAC Requirement and Direct Application
The Committee on Graduate Admissions recognizes the benefits and convenience that the LL.M. Credential Assembly Service provides to applicants. Comparing the total costs of applying individually to multiple law schools (obtaining multiple sets of official transcripts and translations, and ordering multiple official TOEFL score reports) to the fees associated with the centralized LL.M. Credential Assembly Service (which involves sending only one set of the materials to LSAC), applicants may find the LSAC fees reasonable for the convenience the service provides.

Nevertheless, the Committee understands that there may be applicants for whom the LL.M. Credential Assembly Service fees represent a significant financial burden. These applicants may apply directly to NYU Law (application fee $95) using the NYU Direct Application via the Graduate Admissions website. However, the Committee recommends that such applicants consider the significant financial investment of a private legal education, and encourages such applicants to seek means of financing the LL.M. degree throughout the application process to NYU. More information is located in Financing a Graduate Legal Education.

We prefer the $95 direct application fee be paid online with a credit card via the NYU Direct Application. If applicants are unable to pay the direct application fee with a credit card, they may mail the fee with the Payment Identification Form (accessible from the NYU Direct Application) using an international money order, or check drawn on a U.S. bank, payable to New York University in U.S. dollars. Cash or traveler’s checks are not accepted, and will be returned unprocessed.
