Transfer and Third-Year Visiting/Non-Matriculant Admissions Information
The Transfer and Third-Year Visiting/Non-Matriculant application deadline for Fall 2009 has passed. The Transfer and Third-Year Visiting/Non-Matriculant application for Fall 2010 will be available on May 1, 2010.
If you wish to apply for admission with advanced standing after having completed at least one year at another law school, you should apply for Transfer or Non-Matriculant admission. Transfer and Non-Matriculant admission is available to those students who are in good standing in Juris Doctor programs at law schools that are either:
- Members of the Association of American Law Schools.
- Approved by the Section on Legal Education of the American Bar Association.
Foreign attorneys, including foreign attorneys who are LL.M. students at ABA-approved law schools and/or foreign attorneys who hold LL.M. degrees from ABA-approved law schools, may not transfer into nor gain any advanced standing in NYU School of Law's J.D. program. If interested in J.D. study at NYU School of Law, they must apply to and, if admitted, enroll in and complete the full three year J.D. program. This includes LL.M. students enrolled at, and LL.M. graduates of, NYU School of Law.
Transfer
Transfer applicants are admitted for the Fall term only, must have completed first-year course-work by July 1 in order to apply, and are not eligible to apply if more than five years have elapsed since they last attended law school. They must have earned no less than 28 and no more than 33 credits in order to be eligible for admission. No decisions will be made on Transfer applicants based upon one semester of grades; all Fall and Spring semester grades must be submitted.
Enrolled Transfer students spend their second and third years of law school at NYU School of Law and receive their J.D. degrees from NYU School of Law.
LSDAS Service for Transfer Applicants
The Law School Admission Council's Law School Data Assembly Service (LSDAS) has extended its service to applicants for five years. This means that applicants for transfer admission will be able to submit LSAT scores and undergraduate transcripts through LSDAS and must pay only a per report fee ($12.00) to have that data transmitted to NYU School of Law. LSAT score reports and undergraduate transcripts with degree conferral are required to complete applications for transfer admission. For more information, contact LSAC.
Third-Year Visiting/Non-Matriculant
Third-Year Visiting/Non-Matriculant applicants must have completed two full years (at least 55 credits) and need no more than 30 additional credits to complete requirements for graduation at their current law school. Applicants must also have permission from their current law school to enroll in the Visiting/Non-Matriculant program at NYU School of Law.
Third-Year Visiting/Non-Matriculant applicants are urged to complete required courses prior to visiting at the NYU School of Law since spaces in classes may be limited or even unavailable.
Enrolled Third-Year Visiting/Non-Matriculant students spend their third year of law school at NYU School of Law and receive their J.D. degrees from their "home" law school.
Note for Foreign-Educated LL.M. Students Currently at NYU School of Law: Foreign-educated LL.M. students who are currently matriculated at NYU School of Law may apply to the JD program and receive advanced standing. Interested students must take the LSAT by December and apply as entering first-year JDs by February 1. NYU LL.M. students who are admitted as entering JDs will receive a year of advanced standing credits at the successful completion of their first year.
