Hauser Colloquium: Social Justice and the Climate Emergency: Taking Duties Seriously

Professor J.H.H. Weiler

Fall 2023
Thursdays, 11:00 am -  1:00 pm
Vanderbilt Hall, Room 202

LAW-LW.10127.001

Rights play a central role in the contemporary discussion of law and politics. What about duties? Do we have a duty to protect each other, as a matter of social justice? Do we have a duty to protect the environment — and to address the unequal impacts of climate change and climate law and policy? Do we owe these duties as individuals, or as a society, or as both? Do these duties always correspond to rights, or can they stand alone? Are they owed across borders? Across generations? How might such duties be put into practice -- how might they be enforced?

These are some of the questions that will be considered in this year’s Hauser Colloquium with a series of invited speakers.
