HSLI Frequently Asked Questions

Please note that the information below reflects policies of the NYU program. For Columbia-specific information, please contact the HSLI program at Columbia Law School.

What are the dates and times of HSLI for the 2023-2024 season?

Classes are held each Saturday from 10 AM to 1 PM. The dates of the program are as follows:

  • Fall Semester Dates (2023): Oct. 7, Oct. 14, Oct. 28, and Nov. 11
  • College Day: Nov. 18
  • Spring Semester (2024): Jan. 20, Jan. 27, Feb. 3, Feb. 10, and Feb. 24
  • Graduation: Mar. 2

Students and applicants for the 2023-2024 school year should note that the class session scheduled for September 23rd has been cancelled.

What are the HSLI age requirements?

There are no age requirements as such, though we do require students to be enrolled in high school by the time they begin classes with us. This means that students who will be starting their freshman year (i.e. 9th grade) in September can apply to HSLI during the summer vacation between 8th and 9th grades.

If our family does not live in New York City, may I apply?

Yes. While HSLI students are overwhelmingly New York City residents, residency is not a requirement. In the past, we have had students living in New Jersey and Westchester participate in our program.

If I am not a public school student, may I apply?

Yes. HSLI does not make admissions decisions based on where students go to school or what sort of school they attend. Admission is based on the merits of a student’s application.

When will I know whether I have been accepted or not?

We will reach out to applying students on September 2, 2022, which means that we will be notifying students of their acceptance or rejection into HSLI shortly after we make the decisions. Once an application is submitted to us, any supplemental materials sent afterward will not be considered. Once a decision has been made regarding an applicant’s candidacy, it is final for the programmatic year; if a student wishes to apply again in future years, she or he is welcome to do so.

What is the cost of attending HSLI?

None – HSLI is a tuition-free program, made possible by the generosity of NYU Law and volunteer teachers.

Do HSLI students receive school credit for their work with HSLI?

This is a question for each student’s school, not HSLI. If students are interested in receiving school credit for their work with us, they should speak to their school staff.

Can I participate if I have already completed one year of HSLI?

We are looking for interested students to register for the Moot Court Program where they will take an active role in providing guidance and support for first year students. The primary focus will be on oral argument rather than written briefs, where each student will be responsible for their own case without a partner system in place. If you are a returning student interested in spending more time diving into substantive, exciting, and real legal cases or want to help mentor your fellow classmates, let us know in the additional comments section of the application.
