NYU Law hosts ISIP, top LLM job fair

More than 800 LLM students from 72 countries came to NYU Law on January 29, 2016 for the largest LLM recruiting program in the country, the International Student Interview Program (ISIP). Hosted by NYU Law and sponsored by a consortium of 33 law schools, the annual event is the premier LLM recruiting fair for law firms hoping to attract top foreign-trained law students for internships and permanent positions. This year marks ISIP’s 30th anniversary.

At its inception three decades ago, ISIP hosted only 28 employers, which were primarily based in Europe. As student populations have grown more diverse over time, leading law firms from Latin America and Asia joined the ranks of recruiters at ISIP. This year more than 160 law firms from the US, Europe, Asia, Middle East, and Latin America will have a presence at the event. In addition to interviews at the fair, employers also sponsor additional recruiting events and dinners for candidates around the city.

Though there are students from 33 schools participating in ISIP, NYU Law students are among the strongest candidates, typically securing 20 to 25 percent of all scheduled interviews.

“Our students have been preparing for ISIP since October, and it was exciting to meet with them this week as they make the final adjustments to their resumes and go over their interview talking points,” said Clara Solomon, director at the Law School’s Office of Career Services.

Elie Sherique LLM ’06, an associate with Jones Day in Sao Paolo, secured a position at Weil, Gotschal & Manges in New York through the interview program 10 years ago. He recalls a whirlwind schedule with 17 interviews, and just 20 minutes allotted for each. This year he returns to ISIP as an interviewer hiring for positions at Jones Day’s offices in New York, Miami, and Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, and Munich in Germany.

“Law firms know that ISIP at NYU Law is the best place to find and hire an LLM student,” said Sherique.
