Goals of the Fund

The Ken Thompson Social Justice Fund at NYU Law

The Ken Thompson Social Justice Fund at NYU Law is a tribute to Ken’s groundbreaking work on racial justice and his dedication to effectiveness and fairness in the criminal justice system—and in society at large. Having your support in this endeavor would mean a great deal.

The Fund will be used to advance racial equality in the justice system in one or more of the following ways:

Annual Lecture/Panel Series: $500,000 goal

The Fund will be used to support an annual lecture or panel series focused on prosecutors’ offices and racial justice—criminal justice more broadly—to be co-hosted by the Center on Race, Inequality, and the Law and the Center on the Administration of Criminal Law.

Scholarship Program: $2,000,000 goal

The Fund will be used to support a scholarship program for deserving students. The Ken Thompson Social Justice Scholarship Program will provide scholarships to students committed to promoting social justice, racial equality and fairness, including promoting fundamental fairness in the criminal justice system more broadly.

Professorship: $3,000,000 goal

Because of the central role faculty members play in the life of the Law School’s programs and clinics on racial and criminal justice, ensuring support for faculty salaries, scholarly materials, travel, research and teaching is among the School’s highest priorities. While there are several ways to secure faculty support, the most meaningful and lasting method is through the establishment of an endowed professorship. The Fund will be used to establish the Ken Thompson Professorship in Social and Racial Justice, and it will provide support to faculty members engaged in the fight for racial justice and progressive criminal justice reform.
