Notice from NYS Board of Law Examiners regarding the Pro Bono requirement

New 50 Hour Pro Bono Requirement

-- Posted May 8, 2012; Revised May 22, 2012

The Chief Judge of the State of New York recently announced on May 1, 2012 a 50-hour pro bono service prerequisite for admission to practice in New York. That requirement is NOT in effect for applicants who take and pass the July 2012 bar exam. An advisory committee has been formed which will make recommendations on how to implement the new pro bono service requirement. The rules implementing the new requirement are not expected to be available until September 2012. No further information on the initiative is available at this time. The Board will update this website as more information on the new initiative becomes available.
