Mohamed ElBaradei (LL.M. '71, J.S.D. '74, LL.D. '04) has had the eyes of the world on him since late January, when he emerged as an opposition leader to Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak and called for an end to Mubarak’s 30 year rule. ElBaradei, a Nobel Laureate and the former director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, was among the protestors in Cairo. He was briefly held under house arrest before defying a government-imposed curfew to give a speech before a huge crowd in Liberation Square. On February 11, Mubarak stepped down and, shortly thereafter, the Egyptian military took over the country, calling for an election later this year. ElBaradei has been the subject of much media speculation since he returned to his home country in early 2010, and is considered by many to be a potential presidential candidate, but he has not announced that he will run.
