In September, Nathalie Laureano (LL.M. ’10), who focused on international legal studies at the NYU School of Law, began working as a legal adviser in the Legal Division of the Presidential Chief of Staff Office in Brasília. Laureano offers her opinion on bills, executive orders, and international instruments related to human rights and international law. The Legal Division functions as a final check on the constitutionality and legality of acts being submitted for a presidential signature, working in coordination with other ministries as well as the Presidential Chief of Staff Office’s Governmental Affairs Division to reach a consensus among different governmental bodies.
“It really feels worth it to have dedicated so much time and energy to specializing in the issues I like—human rights and public interest law—and now be able to apply this knowledge where there is real potential for change,” Laureano said.
At NYU Law, Laureano was a student advocate for the Caste Discrimination Project in the International Human Rights Clinic. She was also a Center for Human Rights and Global Justice Fellow at the Legal Resources Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa, where she worked in the Constitutional Litigation Unit. Currently an assistant editor of the Interdisciplinary Journal of Human Rights Law, Laureano received a bachelor of law from the University of São Paulo Law School.
