Judith Kaye ’62, former chief judge of the New York Court of Appeals, was appointed by New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo on March 11 as an independent counsel leading an investigation of Governor David Paterson’s administration.
The investigation concerns two separate matters. One involves allegations of witness tampering in connection with a domestic violence incident in which one of Paterson’s top aides is implicated, and the other relates to suggestions that Paterson lied under oath about the circumstances of his accepting World Series tickets.
Kaye, who is currently of counsel at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom and will not be paid for her independent counsel role, said in a statement, “I promise that the public will have a full, fair and independent accounting of the facts.” The first woman to serve on New York’s highest court, she also held the chief judge post longer than anyone else in state history.
