Vijaya Gadde ’00 and Nick Clegg named 2024 Convocation speakers

Dean Troy McKenzie ’00 has announced that Vijaya Gadde ’00 and Nick Clegg will deliver keynote addresses at this year’s NYU Law Convocation, to be held on May 16, 2024 at the Theater at Madison Square Garden.

Gadde, the former chief legal officer and head of compliance, policy, trust and safety at Twitter, will provide a keynote address at a morning ceremony for graduating JD students. Clegg, who will address LLM and other graduate degree students at an afternoon ceremony, is president of global affairs for Meta Platforms and former deputy prime minister of the United Kingdom.

From 2013 until 2022, when it was acquired, Gadde led the legal department at Twitter, first serving as legal director and then general counsel and chief legal officer. Prior to joining Twitter, Gadde served as senior director of legal at Juniper Networks, a Silicon Valley tech company that produces networking hardware and software. She began her legal career at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, where she worked for a decade.

In addition to her service on the NYU Law board of trustees, Gadde sits on the boards of Guardant Health, a leading precision oncology company; Mercy Corps, an international humanitarian NGO; and Planet Labs, a satellite imaging and data company. She is a founding partner of investment collective #Angels.

Clegg served as deputy prime minister of the United Kingdom from 2010 to 2015. He was leader of the Liberal Democrats party from 2007 to 2015 and a member of the UK Parliament, representing Sheffield Hallam, from 2005 to 2017 having previously served as a member of the European Parliament and as a senior advisor to the European Commission.

Clegg joined Facebook in 2018 and was named president of global for Meta Platforms in 2022. At Meta, he spearheaded the creation of the Facebook Oversight Board, an independent body that helps to answer questions regarding the internet and freedom of expression (Kenji Yoshino, Chief Justice Earl Warren Professor of Constitutional Law, has served on the board since 2023). Clegg is the author of How to Stop Brexit (And Make Britain Great Again) and Politics: Between the Extremes. In 2018, he was knighted in recognition of his political and public service to the United Kingdom.
