Samuel Scheffler delivers the H.L.A. Hart Memorial Lecture at Oxford

On May 27, University Professor Samuel Scheffler delivered the H.L.A. Hart Memorial Lecture at the University of Oxford on the topic “Distributive Justice, the Basic Structure, and the Place of Private Law.”

Given annually, the prestigious lecture is named for Professor of Jurisprudence H.L.A. Hart (1907-1992), who wrote the highly influential book The Concept of Law, which expanded on his theory of legal positivism.

Previous speakers have included Ronald Dworkin, Frank Henry Sommer Professor of Law; Richard Epstein, Laurence A. Tisch Professor of Law; Samuel Issacharoff, Bonnie and Richard Reiss Professor of Constitutional Law; and Thomas Nagel, Professor of Philosophy and Law Emeritus.

Scheffler’s lecture will be published in the Oxford Journal of Legal Studies.
