The American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS) announced on April 19 that it had elected two members of the Law School faculty as fellows: George T. Lowy Professor of Law Marcel Kahan and Stuyvesant P. Comfort Professor of Law Geoffrey Miller. They join 210 others from a broad range of fields who were named to the highly prestigious honor society, including actress Helen Mirren, Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, and astronomer Paul Butler, who has discovered more than 330 planets.
Kahan approaches corporate law from a law-and-economics perspective. His scholarship focuses on shareholder voting, state competition in corporate law, the regulation of takeovers, as well as the contractual provisions in credit agreements and bond indentures. Miller is similarly cross-disciplinary, using economic methods to understand a wide variety of legal phenomena, including complex litigation, the law of financial institutions, American legal history, and ancient and biblical law.
Founded in 1780 by John Adams, John Hancock, and other scholar-patriots, the AAAS elects leading “thinkers and doers” from each generation. New members will be inducted in a ceremony on October 1 at the AAAS headquarters in Cambridge, Mass.
