Javier Vargas LLM ’93 becomes judge in New York City Housing Court

Javier Vargas LLM ’93 was appointed by Chief Administrative Judge A. Gail Prudenti to be a judge of the New York City Civil Court, in the Housing part, in Bronx county. He has been on the bench since May 2013. He has previously served as the chief court attorney for the law department of the Appellate Term, First Department, where he was responsible for supervising a team of nine attorneys for the Court.  Vargas has also served as a senior court attorney for the New York State Court of Appeals, the Nassau County Family Court, the New York State Supreme Court of Nassau County, and as a principal law clerk to Judge Ruth Balkin at the Appellate Division, Second Judicial Department, in Brooklyn, New York.

Vargas is also actively involved with the Hispanic National Bar Association (HNBA) and the Puerto Rican Bar Association (PRBA). Among the various positions he has held in the two associations, for the past four years, he has served as chair of the Scholarship Fund Selection Committee, working with a team of PRBA members to select recipients of law student scholarships. Vargas is dedicated to a number of other charitable and cultural organizations, such as InMotion and Volunteers Lawyers Project, as well as professional associations including the New York City Bar Association and the Lesbian and Gay Law Association of Greater New York.
