Joseph Weiler honored during visit to Rome

University Professor Joseph Weiler, Joseph Straus Professor of Law, received a series of honors during a trip to Italy earlier this month. Weiler was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Rome III. During an audience at the Vatican he was greeted by Pope Benedict XVI. Later, at a dinner in his honor at the Quirinale, the official residence of President Giorgio Napolitano, Weiler was made a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, the country’s senior order of knighthood and Italy’s highest civilian honor. Weiler now shares the rank of Knight Grand Cross with high-ranking dignitaries from around the world such as Prince Philip, Queen Sofía of Spain, and Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito Jr.
