Law School honored for work with public-service organization

At its annual awards dinner on April 27, Sponsors for Educational Opportunity (SEO) honored NYU Law for helping further the organization’s mission. SEO offers educational and career programs to students from underserved communities to maximize their opportunities for success in college and the workforce. The Law School’s association with SEO began when Professor Peggy Cooper Davis, John S. R. Shad Professor of Lawyering and Ethics, adapted the Lawyering program, which she then headed, to train SEO interns during the summer.

In accepting the award, Dean Richard Revesz said, “SEO’s mission aligns with the Law School’s longstanding commitment to supporting students from all backgrounds, in order to create more diverse classrooms, courtrooms, board rooms, law firms, and public and private institutions.”  Revesz noted that a variety of programs at the Law School have the same objective, among them the AnBryce Scholarship Program, which provides full tuition scholarships to outstanding J.D. students who are among the first in their immediate family to pursue a graduate degree. It was no coincidence, Revesz noted, that AnBryce Scholar Helam Gebremariam ’10--who was editor-in-chief at the New York University Law Review and the student speaker at last year’s graduation--was an SEO Career Program alum. Gebramariam attended the awards dinner.
