University of London holds symposium in tribute to Thomas Franck

On May 27, the first anniversary of former Murry and Ida Becker Professor of Law Emeritus Thomas Franck’s death, two centers at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London hosted “Remembering Tom Franck: The Man and his Legacy.” The all-day tribute to Franck, a longtime leader in the field of international law, featured presentations made by his friends, colleagues, and former students.

The symposium’s four panels were: “Tom Franck: Friend, Teacher, Scholar,” which featured Dame Rosalyn Higgins, former president of the International Court of Justice; “Human Rights, Democratic Governance and the Recourse to Force,” which included international human rights lawyer Sir Nigel Rodley; “‘Our Man in Dar es Salaam’: Tom Franck, Decolonisation and Self-determination”; and “Legitimacy and Fairness: International Courts and Institutions,” which included a presentation by Devika Hovell (LL.M. '01).
