Kevin Huffman '98 is named Tennessee's education commissioner

On March 3, Kevin Huffman '98 was named Tennessee’s education commissioner by Governor Bill Haslam. Huffman, who will take office April 4, will manage Tennessee’s $500 million in federal education grants and $90 million pledged to the troubled Memphis school system by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
 
Huffman is currently executive vice president of public affairs for Teach for America, a nonprofit based in New York that sends college graduates to high-need schools in 39 regions across the country. During his 10-year tenure, he raised the organization's annual operating revenue from $11.2 million in 2000 to $115 million in 2008.
