On March 3, Kevin Huffman '98 was named Tennessee’s education commissioner by Governor Bill Haslam. Huffman, who will take office April 4, will manage Tennessee’s $500 million in federal education grants and $90 million pledged to the troubled Memphis school system by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Huffman is currently executive vice president of public affairs for Teach for America, a nonprofit based in New York that sends college graduates to high-need schools in 39 regions across the country. During his 10-year tenure, he raised the organization's annual operating revenue from $11.2 million in 2000 to $115 million in 2008.
