Michigan AG Submitted Testimony to Protect Ratepayers against Excessive Natural Gas Rate Increase

On March 24, 2020, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel submitted testimony to the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) to protect ratepayers against an excessive rate increase request filed by natural gas supplier DTE Energy. DTE sought a rate increase of $204 million, which would increase natural gas bills for residential customers by more than 8 percent. The testimony submitted by AG Nessel’s office argued for a rate increase of no more than $65.5 million — sufficient to ensure the safety and reliability of natural gas infrastructure, without placing an unreasonable cost burden on consumers.

On November 22, 2022, AG Nessel announced that she had succeeded in saving customers of DTE Electric Company over $350 million in electricity costs after submitting testimony arguing that residential customers should not face a rate increase.
