Michigan AG Secured Civil Penalties for Utility’s Failure to Mark Gas Lines

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel successfully advocated before the Michigan Public Service Commission for civil penalties against Consumers Energy, following the utility’s failure to mark its natural gas lines after receiving dig notices as required under the state’s Underground Facility Damage Prevention and Safety Act. In addition to $145,000 in civil penalties, Consumers Energy was required to make a $100,000 contribution to MISS DIG, the state’s utility safety notification system, and a $300,000 donation to a nonprofit organization that provides utility assistance to vulnerable Michigan residents.
