California AG Secured Settlement with Metal Recycling Facility Over Air Quality Violations

California Attorney General Xavier Becerra secured a settlement requiring Schnitzer Steel Industries, the operator of a metal shredding and recycling facility in West Oakland, to make significant modifications to its equipment in order to prevent fugitive emissions of toxic air pollutants that pose a serious threat to public health. The settlement also required the company to pay “roughly $1.55 million for civil penalties, $2.1 million for supplemental environmental projects that will directly benefit environmental justice communities in West Oakland, and $450,000 for reimbursement of investigative and enforcement costs.”
