Election Rules
Voting
All 1L's and graduate students (LLM's and JSD’s) are entitled to vote in this election. However, only the members of the corresponding class (and in the case of 1Ls, the corresponding section) can vote for their Class Representative positions. In addition to the election, there may be a ratification vote for an amendment to the SBA Constitution for which all registered J.D. candidates are encouraged to cast a vote.

Petitions
Completed petitions must be returned to the SBA office in the basement of Mercer, 240 Mercer St. by 12:00 am, Monday, October 7. Petitions for Class Representative positions must be signed by 25 current students from your class year. Candidates must sign the petition to evidence that they have read the election rules and understand that violation of the rules is grounds for disqualification. Students may sign petitions for candidates running for the same position.

Personal Statements
Along with their petitions, candidates are required to submit a personal statement to the SBA office. Personal statements for Class Representative positions must be no more than one page in length. Candidates may include a black-and-white photo of themselves on that page for publication along with their personal statements. These statements will be made available to the student body before and during the election. All of the personal statements will be photocopied in packets and available to the student body on the election table and in the mailroom.

Posters
Candidates are allowed a maximum of four posters, each no larger than 11" by 14" (one each for Mercer and D'Ag, two for Vanderbilt). Candidates must follow the building's posting policy in Mercer and D'Ag to get their posters up. If candidates want to share posters with other candidates, then their number of posters is correspondingly increased -- i.e. two candidates who share all of their posters get a maximum of 8 posters, same location distribution; if two candidates have two joint posters, then each candidate can also have three "solo" posters.

The SBA has worked with the administration to get more space for candidate posters in Vanderbilt. There will be a blackboard in the NYU School of Law Library (on the entry level by the stairs) on which each candidate may have an 8 " by 11" poster--the smaller size is due to the limited space. In order to have any poster placed in Vanderbilt, the candidate must leave the posters with the SBA Office Manager in the SBA office. All posters received will be hung in the designated spaces during the campaign period (October 5 to October 16). Due to an administrative policy, no posters are permitted anywhere else in Vanderbilt.

Mailbox Stuffing
If desired, candidates may stuff the student mailboxes in Vanderbilt no more than two times from October 7 - October 15. The piece of paper should be no larger than 8 " by 5 " (i.e., half of a regular sheet of paper) and no bribes are permitted (i.e., no candy or other gifts attached).

Phoning
Telephoning individual students is permitted. Distributed ACUS messages are not allowed.

Leafleting
"Menu attacks" are not permitted.

Email
Emailing your friends to ask them or remind them to vote for you is permitted. However, mass distributed emails (emails directed to 15 or more students) are restricted to three times during the campaign period. On mass emails, candidates should "cc" Election Coordinator Shawn Shillington (sms352@nyu.edu) to ensure that there is no debate over their compliance.

During the election period (from when petitions are available until after the election), candidates are NOT permitted to hold or have held for them election parties. Election parties are defined by the SBA as those parties where candidates post or hand out campaign materials, or give a speech on behalf of their candidacy. Professors are not required to allow campaign announcements during class.

Election
No campaigning, in person or by proxy, or campaign materials allowed within 50 feet of the polling table.

Violations
Any violation of these election rules may result in the disqualification of a candidate. Complaints regarding violations should be submitted in writing and will be considered by the Elections Subcommittee. Complaints should be emailed to Shawn Shillington.

If you are unsure whether or not something is a violation of the election rules, contact the Elections Committee coordinator, Shawn Shillington.
