Spring 2009 Important Exam Information (Study Spaces, Refreshments, and Other Information)

Furman and Van Hall Coat Checks Closing for the Summer

While Facilities makes every effort to keep the coat checks open through the end of final exams, the rooms are staffed by other University students who often choose to stop working this time of year so that they can focus on their own studies. This year the drop off has been significant enough that we are forced to make the following changes:

1) Beginning Thursday, April 30th: The Furman Hall coat check will close at 4:00 PM. If you need to pick up items left in the coat check after that time please contact the Public Safety Officer at the Front Desk who will contact a Facilities staff member to retrieve your belongings. Van Hall coat check will continue to be open Monday through Thursday until 11 PM and 10 PM on Friday.

2) Beginning Monday, May 11th: Furman and Van Hall coat checks will be closed for the summer.

We apologize for any inconvenience these scheduling changes may cause.

Overview

We encourage you to read this information to connect to exam policies and procedures, identify support services for well-being issues, describe the available study spaces, and identify sources of free food. We wish you all the best for the Spring 2009 exam period!

Exam Policies and Procedures

To ensure that you comply with all exam policies and procedures, please consult the Academic Services Exam Information webpage.

Special Circumstances Impacting Performance

The Office of Student Affairs is available to assist you with different challenges that often impact students' performance at this time of year. Some common examples include the death of a family member, onset of illness (physical and/or mental), and need for exam accommodations. Under these special circumstances, the Office of Student Affairs will work with the Office of Academic Services to assist you. To request an exam postponement or accommodation, please complete these forms and submit them, along with a letter explaining your request, to the Office of Student Affairs in Furman Hall, Suite 474 or via e-mail at law.studentaffairs@nyu.edu.

Illness Before or During an Exam

If you become ill before an exam and believe that you will not be able to complete it, do not begin the examination. Immediately report your illness to the proctor who will send you to the appropriate administrative office. If you become ill after starting the exam, also report it to the proctor immediately. You will then be sent to one of the following offices for further instructions: Office of Records and Registration (FH 400), the Office of Academic Services (FH 474) or the Office of Student Affairs (FH 474). For more information, consult the Student Handbook, Section F. Examinations.

Study Spaces

Different locations are available for study from April 28 through May 13. During the exam period, May 1 through May 13, classrooms will primarily be used to administer exams. Please check the signs in the lobby of Vanderbilt Hall and Furman Hall each day to see which classrooms are available as study space. But also know that there are designated Quiet Study Rooms for the exam period beginning May 1 through May 13. See the Quiet Study Rooms PDF (link at left). If you have questions about these spaces, contact Lillian Zalta, Assistant Dean, Operations and Administrative Services.

The following study spaces in Vanderbilt Hall*, Furman Hall, and the Law Library** will be open until 2:00 a.m. (Note: the coat check in VH and FH will close at 11:00 p.m.)

  • Vanderbilt Hall:
    Student Center (VH110)
    Golding Lounge
    Greenberg Lounge
All 2nd floor classrooms not already booked

*Note: Tishman and Greenberg are available for use as study spaces during the ongoing construction on and around the School of Law campus; however, users may find that these spaces are not conducive to quiet study. If the construction becomes too disruptive, we may remove these locations from the list of available study spaces (updated 4/27/09)

  • Furman Hall:
    Guarini Study Lounge
    John Sexton Student Forum
All 1st, 2nd, and 3rd floor study rooms and classrooms not already booked
    Wachtell Cafe (open 24 hours)
  • Law Library:
Law Library Extended Hours**: Students will not be permitted to enter the Law Library after 11:30 p.m.; however, those already in the library at that time will be permitted to stay until 2:00 a.m.
Lockers will be accessible to students, except those lockers in certain closed areas of the Library.
All study areas are designated as quiet areas; no food will be allowed.
For more information about Law Library guidelines during this period, please click here.

IMPORTANT: During the restricted access period, April 20 through May 15, NYU non-law students will not be able to enter the Law Library or any other study area, which includes all classrooms and group study rooms in Vanderbilt Hall and Furman Hall, unless students are attending a specified event. NYU SCPS paralegal students are not subject to this limitation.

From April 6th to May 18th, all students living in School of Law housing can reserve study rooms on the 8th floor of the Mercer Residence for group or individual study.

  • Study room reservations must be made in person at the Office of Residential Life in Mercer, Monday through Friday between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Evening or weekend walk-ins must see the Door Attendant.
  • Room 312 is available only to Mercer residents; no reservations will be accepted for this room.

D’Agostino Hall:

  • The Commons is the only available study space in D’Agostino; students must present NYU ID to enter the building.

Kimmel Center:

  • Student groups that are registered through Student Activities may schedule rooms for study by calling 998-4700.
  • Some rooms are available to all students during the “reading period” by calling Pamela Bolen at 998-4901.

Bobst Library:

  • To reserve a room in Bobst, click here and enter your NetID and password.
  • The areas on the lower levels (#1 & #2) are open 24 hours.

Transportation and Safety:

May 6 - 12: EXAM WEEK. There will be no Safe Ride Van Service. Overnight schedule service is provided to Bobst Library on the regular buses* and trolleys. During the overnight hours, buses will run once per hour. Please refer to the Special Schedules Section for the "WEEKEND EXAM" schedule.

For more information regarding routes and schedules, please visit the Office of Public Safety web site. The website also offers students the opportunity to register for route-specific schedule updates via e-mail.

We suggest that students who are studying in Vanderbilt Hall and Furman Hall late at night meet by the Guard's Desk in either building on the hour and half-hour in order to walk back to D'Agostino Hall and Mercer Residence in groups. Please remember that there are NYU Emergency Phones located at several places on West 3rd Street between Vanderbilt Hall and Mercer Residence Hall.

(* Please note: May 12 is the final day of Spring semester service)

Feast for Finals:
