What's New
Coase's List
Coase's List is the NYU Law student community's all-purpose listserv. Coase's List is a resource for current law students and alumni to exchange and sell property and services with each other, to publicize law school related and noncommercial events, and to seek advice and opinions on matters incident to life at the law school. Any subscriber to Coase's List is free to send an email to the list, and messages can be recieved as they are sent, or in a daily digest version.
To subscribe to Coase's List, log in to NYU Home. Under the Forums section, click on the hyperlink that says "Subscribe to an NYU forum." Coase's List is listed under the "topic list" section near the bottom of the page. Subscribe using your nyu.edu email address, as non-NYU addresses will be unsubscribed by the moderator.
SBA Forum
The SBA Forum is a more permanent version of Coase's List. Addressing the same purposes in a discussion board format, all registered law students can use the SBA Forum, whether or not subscribed to Coase's List.
To view the SBA Forum, long onto NYU Home, and click on the Academics tab. "NYU Law Student Bar Association Forum" should be listed under the "Other Courses" section of blackboard classes. If you cannot see this option, you may need to click on the "Update Blackboard Classes Information" option. Once logged into the forum, the Discussion Board section has various topic areas where students can post to exchange goods, services, and information.
Social Events
The SBA is trying to rotate our regular Thursday night activities between Golding Lounge, local bars, and other entertaining venues.
SBA Lounge Nights
Our popular free event for students, featuring a different premium labeled beer at each party. We are also rotating entertainment, including live music, djs, and potentially dance instruction. We encourage student groups to co-sponsor Lounge Nights with us -- whether its an Art House event with IPELS, Wine & Cheese with Law Women, or any other exciting theme your group can come up with!
SBA Bar Review
We are breaking up our Golding nights with "bar review" -- picking a different bar or club every other week for our students. These nights will feature drink specials, open bar, reduced cover, or some other special for NYU students. We'd like to have a rotation of different types of bars: from your typical college dive to a swank lounge. Any ideas for location or co-sponsorship are welcome.
Other Events
We are constantly on the look-out for other types of events for Thursday night. We are currently looking into theater nights or movie nights for NYU School of Law.
Transparency
The past administrations of the SBA Board of Governors (the Board) have worked very hard for the NYU School of Law community. The present administration is no different in its desire to make your NYU School of Law experience a rich one.
To borrow from the words of our old Dean Sexton, all of us should be ³striving to make this a better place when we leave here than it was when we first entered.² Constant improvement is a good thing.
One main thing that the 2005-6 SBA Board is attempting to do this year is make the inner workings of the Law School more transparent - from how decisions are made by the Dean and his Administration, to what goes on at the weekly SBA meetings.
There are several not-so-new vehicles that the SBA Board is trying to make the student body more aware of, for instance: the SBA bulletin in Vanderbilt 110, the chalking of classroom boards with important information, the weekly email from the SBA President, and the SBA web site (but I guess you figured that one out).
There are also a few new ways that the SBA is trying to get information around town:
The SBA Student Group Leaders Listserve
The SBA has set up a listserve containing all the leaders (chairs, co-chairs and some treasurers) of the myriad of student groups. Not only is this an effective way for the student groups to communicate concerns and suggestions to the SBA, it is also a wonderful way to share ideas and connect the student groups with one another. There is much more cross-pollenization going on this year thanks to the list serve. So be on the lookout for some fabulous co-sponsored events!
Student-Faculty Committee Student Representatives
There are so many decisions to be made at the law school. One way to facilitate efficiency is to divvy up the workload. This is where the Student-Faculty committees fit in. Specialized groups of professors, administrators, and eager and interested students get together to discuss important issues that affect all of us. This year there are 17 Student-Faculty committees.
The SBA appoints students to the committees. Student reps of these committees will be reporting regularly to the SBA and important issues will be disseminated to the student body through the weekly email from the President, and articles in the Commentator.
Monthly Dean's Meetings
Once a month the SBA meets with Dean Revesz and various other Associate Deans from around the law school. The email listserves help to get the word out if there is something to discuss with the Administration. This monthly forum allow the SBA Executive Board the chance to bring pressing issues to the direct attention of the Administration, as well as serves as a time for the Administration to be able to ask for student input on any given issue.
All SBA regular meetings are open to all members of the NYU School of Law community. For meeting times and locations, or for other questions or concerns, the SBA Board of Governors can be reached at law.sba@nyu.edu .
