Welcome
The National Lawyers Guild is an association dedicated to
the need for basic change in the structure of our political
and economic system. NLG seeks to unite the lawyers, law
students, legal workers and jailhouse lawyers of America
in an organization that shall function as an effective political
and social force in the service of the people, to the end
that human rights shall be more sacred than property interests.
NLG'S aim is to bring together all those who recognize the
importance of safeguarding and extending the rights of workers,
women, farmers and minority groups, upon whom the welfare
of the entire nation depends; who seek actively to eliminate
racism; who work to maintain and protect our civil rights
and liberties in the face of persistent attacks upon them;
and who look upon the law as an instrument for the protection
of the people, rather than for their repression
In addition to being active in legal observing and mass defense,
the NYU Chapter of the NLG has been involved in promoting
educational campaigns on issues ranging from US Foreign Policy
in Latin America, Immigrant Rights in NY, the Anti-Globalization
movement, lobbying to change mandatory minimum sentence drug
laws, and other local and global issues. This fall (2004)
we are focusing our efforts on getting W out of office through
both direct action and collaboration with other student,
city, state and national organizations. Throughout the year,
we will continue our bi-weekly political film series, our
jailhouse lawyering program, speakers series, and general
hell-raising throughout the law school.
Please contact one of us to get involved, and learn more
about ways to add your voice and energy to this group of
lifelong activist lawyers dedicated to taking stock of the
inequities of our system and working tirelessly towards changing
them.
